I think that Sega (the one that we knew and loved -- not sure if they'd ever actually come back) could do well in the portable market if they really played their cards right. The 3DS is fucking awesome, but it's going to be incredibly expensive. The PSP isn't doing anything right except for being good with emulators and having a few nice exclusives (some of the biggest in Japan at least being from Sega themselves -- Yakuza, Phantasty Star Portable 2, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Project Diva -- as well as a few from Capcom, who's always had a very intimate relationship with Sega). I don't profess to know where exactly Sega could fit into that market, as unpredictable as it is right now, but I think that handhelds in their current incarnation is the best place possible for Sega's style -- short, fast, furious arcade gameplay is okay, even FAVORABLE on a handheld. Could a new Crazy Taxi sell well on consoles? Highly doubtful -- on a handheld, though? You might have something there.

It would be the perfect platform for Sega to work with their stable of old properties, due to the standards of portable gaming as well as the lower costs thereof. How expensive would it be to produce the equivalent of a portable Xbox these days, with a proprietary cartridge and OS to prevent (easy) pirating? I don't think anyone would complain if we were able to get new Sega games on an easy-to-develop-for platform in the fast and quirky spirit of Dreamcast-era classics and re-releases of all of our favorites from Zaxxon to Panzer Dragoon Orta for download/on compilations. Okay, I'm pipe-dreaming now... plus even if Sega did have the same staff as back in the day, Sammy would have nothing to do with something so... y'know... cool.

Nitpick: Initial D is not really a Sega IP. Also they were making Initial D games as far back as the Saturn.

For what it's worth, your point is still perfectly valid. :D
