I'm not a phone geek, and my wife more or less convinced me to upgrade to the Motorola Backflip. Suddenly I feel like I've stumbled upon a gold mine!

I just started playing Mother 3 on the Gameboid emulator.

I will be getting my first smartphone and it will have android 2.3.3 gingerbread os.
I have never used a smartphone nor do I really have any ideas on what apps are available.
Any recommendations/suggestions for free useful games and apps?

Apps: Airpush Detector, Barcode Scanner, Shazam, Yelp, and various Messenger/Google suit stuff. I just got it, so I'm still hunting down some new stuff - what did you end up getting?

All I have so far for games are: Angry Birds and Sonic CD (and Sheep Launcher since my gf finds it amusing). Anyone know of any good shmups?

If you get a phone with a hard keyboard there may be a game gripper available. That is what I use and it works great. I wrote this shitty mini-review that has a link to a video of it in action. The emulators are great. Even If I get a new phone one day I am keeping my Droid as a dedicated gaming handheld.

even if you just use a droid phone for wi-fi and one of these... you have a neat handheld system. I'm considering it. How hard is it to configure the controls?

I also just picked up silpheed which is 2.99 and loads of fun. I only got it because I was looking up what games Game Arts had made and saw that and wanted to support them for making lunar.

I've had a Motorola Defy+ for about a month and a half now, and have dabbled in the games a lil. So far the only ones that really have impressed me so far include an excellent Chu Chu Rocket port and GTA 3.

I've only had an android phone for about 2 months (Samsung Galaxy S II X), but I've spent a lot of time seeing what it can do.
So-far aside from the emulators, the games I enjoy most are:

Use the Sixaxis Compatibility Checker to see if your device needs to be rooted in order to use a PS3 controller.

For those of you without a bluetooth controller (I find one Indispensable for any but the simplest games) there is an app called Game Keyboard which can help.

If you have a tablet, you might also consider Joystick-It - also available on Deal Extreme

If you do have a bluetooth controller, Bluez IME is a great way to interface it with your device.

bumping this thread because I would like some touch screen game recommendations for an Android tablet.

Emulators I think I rather stay on the PSP for now, but I noted the many suggestions above and will check some of them out.

Real Racing 3 is a solid racer that allows for screen steering, instead of tilt, and is both pretty and free.

The only major update I would add to my previous list is VNDS Android. I'm not into the Eroge stuff, but Higurashi and Ever17 can be converted to play perfectly on your portable. There's a Wiki that lists many successfully translated and compatable english Visual Novels.
