Re: AVGN disagreements
Metroidvania is the classic action platform based gameplay of games like the original Castlevania and the limited exploration elements of Metroid or Super Metroid. It's not Metroid + SOTN because SOTN was Metroid-based gameplay plus the action/platformed based gameplay of any Castlevania game in the style of the first one(Bloodlines, Dracula X, etc.). SOTN by itself is Metroidvania
Castlevania II and III don't count simply because the way in which the worlds of those games were interconnected was much more simplistic than what you'd find in a Metroid game or SOTN or any of the 2-d Castlevania's that came after SOTN.

Re: AVGN disagreements
AVGN doesn't only feature (review isn't really the right word) games he views as bad, just games that annoy him - case in point, he likes Ninja Gaiden and acknowledges it as a good game but nonetheless finds it frustrating.
I like his informative reviews and ones where he features many games in a franchise - like his Sword Quest review and Street Fighter 2010 review. Lately it's mostly been basic gameplay videos and not so funny jokes.

Re: AVGN disagreements
Well, AVGN is solely for humor, a lot of his reviews aren't even his true thoughts of the game.
As AVGN he points out the small details that are just annoyances most of the time. Somehow, James always makes them seem more important than they actually are. It's a talent, one that Chris Bores (irate gamer) doesn't possess.
On that topic, IrateGamer is pretty terrible. Not just because he copies AVGN, but because almost every single one of his complaints are about graphics, flashy intros, and story. He also rarely plays through games he reviews, and if he does it is with a game genie.
Also, when did James ever say Zombies ate my neighbors was bad? I think you're confusing him with IrateGamer, who did a whole video on it.
Anyway, the one time I disagreed with "AVGN" a lot was actually when I think James
wasn't in character as much and it was during his E3 coverage this year. He implied that DK64 was a bad game.

Actually, I'm in the same boat as you. Just saw him one time, I think Yahtzee over on Zero Punctuation is better at this sort of thing. He's just so damn smart and clever. I only commented to share my thoughts on the Metroidvania tangentnoiseredux wrote:you guys have obviously watched AVGN more than me. Which was once.

So...
Metroidvania doesn't exist, it is now called metroid. ... except that Metroid doesn't have rpg qualities like SOTN.

Re: AVGN disagreements
Yahtzee can be grating, mainly because he often doesn't have his facts straight. He complains MGS4 was too easy, but he was playing on Easy mode. Also, every time he reviews a Wii game, he spends half the review saying how awful the wii is, how horrible of a person you are for owning or wanting to own a Wii, and the game doesn't deserve anything besides kiddy crap and shovelware, and how dare Nintendo reuse it's successful franchises? Or he'll complain one episode that a game is too similar to one game, then the next he'll complain that a game is too different from the games he just complained the last game was too similar too.Gamerforlife wrote:Actually, I'm in the same boat as you. Re: AVGN disagreements
i think AVGN might be past his prime. his reviews from the past two or so years just seem like he is forcing everything and his anger/rants/complaints don't seem genuine. there countless terrible games out there and he chose zelda II to be angry at. it doesn't make sense.
he recently pushed back his reviews from twice a month to once a month. i wouldn't be surprised if he calls it quits here pretty soon. but then again, i think his full time job is being AVGN and he probably makes a decent amount of money so he might try to milk it as long as possible. if that is the case, his 'reviews' will get shittier and shittier.

if you took a shit, please put it back
