The 300HT you posted definately isn't a bad bike, and will be much nicer than picking up a department store bike or old beater off craigslist. But the specialized hardrock you asked about would easily be worth the the extra $80-100 over the 300HT, especially if you can find a deal at a local shop who usually offer free tune-ups, discounted maintenance, etc. with your new bike.

But it's really up to you and what you feel comfortable spending

Absolutely avoid the skinny racer tires, stick with "Mountain Bike" tires for daily potholes and other road hazards. Back pack and small metal carrier over the back tire will help in lugging the college manuals.
There's nothing wrong with skinny tires. I've been using a set of armadillos on my Specialized Allez for a few years now and never had a blow out despite hitting a few pot holes. There's something to be said for the precision steering and speed of a nice road tire. Also, with the decreased surface area he'd also substantially lower his chances of hitting a nail or thorn.

Unless he PLANS on hitting potholes, I don't think skinny tires should be discounted.
I would have to agree on the tires.
Not really a flat no one plans on hitting a pot hole. The mountain tires are just easier to maneuver through unforeseen road hazards. Skinny tires are great for the faster ride, but increase chance of getting sucked into grooves of a poor condition bike path or road.

That is a beautiful thing. When I'm done with school, this is the kind of ride I want to have for myself. And on a personal note, I can definitely respect the custom placement of the handlebars. That looks like a VERY fast rig. What kind of pedals do you use? I can't help but notice they are missing in the pic. Clipless?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
