Possibility of a new console brand coming into the market

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I have no idea why anyone would be surprised by Sony or Microsoft's success. Regardless of their history with gaming, Sega and Atari, and even Nintendo, are small apples compared to Sony and particularly Microsoft. What the latter lack in gaming history they made up for in money.

There's a reason Nintendo had to change the market for video games; Even if Nintendo 64 and Gamecube had been the top systems of their era, Nintendo still wouldn't have the kind of resources it would take to match the power of PS3 or Xbox 360, which sold for a loss long after release. Microsoft has the kind of income to buy major developers (Rare) and buy access to franchises like Final Fantasy.

Even in Atari's prime, they were still a small company compared to the behemoths of today. Sega probably could have survived like Nintendo if not for their 32X and Saturn woes, but even then they'd only be surviving today if they found a niche like Nintendo did. Sony and Microsoft are giants - a far cry compared to the Nintendo and Sega and SNK we knew years ago.

If xbox never came around then the Dreamcast would have lasted longer.

Fixed again.

Back on topic, a new company coming onto the market would spell certain death for that company. Unless one of the giants bought out the other one, or one of them went bankrupt and couldn't continue making consoles. But seriously, who would be able to fathom that happening in the near future?
Collects promo gaming stuff, certain import games, hockey memorabilia, and other oddball things. (sig and avy under construction)

Apple may come out with something that does everything and hooks to the TV and will unofficially be a game console in some people's eyes. (like the iPhone) It will all be downloadable apps.

They did release a console thing once, the Apple Pippin!

Google may do something, too. But I haven't seen them do much hardware, maybe they'll start making games?

Or possibly, just a new company! You never know, it's entirely possible if they have the funds and know who to talk to and stuff.

Plus there's the other's like Magnavox, Samsung, Philips, etc. Sony did it, so they can try (again).

I think apple is the most likely contender listed so far. they have the money to keep a system afloat even if it costs em for a few years like the Xbox. But I think they are going to stick with the Ipod/pad etc. because they have the up hand on that market.

A lot more than two, foremost of them (IMO) being Hudson. :)

Hudson, Sega and NEC should team up and release another console. Call it the Sega Turbo Bee Engine.

The irony here is that there's evidence to show that the xbox was originally concieved as a Sega/Microsoft collaboration.

The dreamcast's cancellation was due to NOTHING but Sega. In fact, the month before they pulled the plug, the DC had had its highest selling month yet. The DC could've easily survived, Sega didn't want to bother with it.

To be fair, Sega pretty deep in the hole at that point.
