SPOILER

Image

I just recalled: Syberia 2's ending was quite a tear-jerker, where Hans gets to fulfill his life-long dream of riding the mammoths. BUT: It was delivered using a cutscene and Hans was just a secondary character, and after the emotional moment came to pass I was actually mad at him for leaving the venerable Kate Walker behind.

So, it might as well have been a CG short and it would have moved me the same way.. like UP did for instance. The processions of the game itself had little bearing on the emotional aspects of the ending. But MC2-Microïds did a fine job nonetheless.

Maybe it's just because I already knew it was coming, but I just played through FF7 for the first time and Aeris' death was honestly pretty lame. You didn't really know what she was doing there until much later when you find out about holy, and I don't think they quite built it up enough. Also, I hate to be one of those guys, but the scene really could've used some blood. Just seeing the sword go through her like she was a giant sentient piece of butter looked a bit silly.

I did, however, really like how they played Aeris' theme throughout the Jenova-Life battle, and when Cloud lies her in the water, it was somewhat emotional. The death itself just didn't have much of an impact.

On topic: When the giant metroid is killed in Super Metroid. Theme of Samus starts playing and you get the hyper beam, hellbent on getting revenge on that asshole Mother Brain for killing your friend. Fucking awesome.

Also, despite the fact that I've probably beaten the game over 20 times, the ending of Super Mario RPG, when Geno goes back to Star Road and it goes through and shows everyone rebuilding the world, always moves me. I'm sure a lot of it is based on nostalgia, but its such a happy ending that just fits the game perfectly.

If this doesn't at least make you feel sad, you either have never played the game or are made of stone. Truly one of the best voice acting moments in a video game.

edit: Okay, so it's not really the voice acting, scratch that. More so the writing that makes this scene excellent.

Saddest moment in gaming

Post by Zandengoff »

Just finished Shadow of the Colossus and I think that ending will stick with me for a long time. Really one of the saddest moments that I have ever experienced, in gaming or any medium. Anyone else have any moments that they remember, or any thing on this one in particular?

Made Gunpei Yokoi (creator of the Gameboy) resign in shame. Where he then got hit by a car before rising back to glory. Yeah, I would say that was pretty sad.

Chrono Cross

Spoilers:

When Serge travels into Kids past just in time to watch Lucca and her orphanage die in flames. The 6 year old version of Kid watches her home burning in the night sky and begs Serge to stay with her...and then he vanishes back to the present, leaving her all alone.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
