You must have had an idiot for a teacher or something, because the above statement does not describe mathematics at all.

At least, not unless maybe you start studying foundational issues, which you wouldn't do in high school. That stuff literally drives people mad.

You know what I hate? College teachers who don't use the book and just dictate notes. Those books are expensive, and buying one for nothing only to get screwed on the sell back prices pissed me off

That's why you never buy your books until the 2nd week of classes. Plus, you can sometimes get a bargain from someone who's dropped the class in the first week.

For your core subjects, you can get by with any book really*. Calculus is calculus no matter what book you use. For more advanced subjects, they usually only assign a textbook because they have to. Which is good, because you're paying to be taught by an expert in the field. If they just teach out of the book, you could read the book yourself and get as good of an education.

*unless they're assigning homework from the book. In that case, they should just go DIAF.

In terms of the subject matter my favorite HS class was DiffEq. In terms of teachers I had an amazing History teacher. Even the semesters I didn't have him I'd sit in on his class if my schedule allowed (my HS was scheduled like college, so I could do that).

I'm amazed you had diffeq in HS. The best we had was AP calc that was only good enough to count for 1 semester of calculus. I didn't get any diffeq until my 4th semester in college.

It wasn't a fully college-level DiffEq course; more of a survey. My HS had an accelerated math and science program. I was doing Calc in my junior year and we had interesting science courses like astrophysics and modern physics.
