There may be some truth to this, as a quick search on wikipedia shows that they were both released in November 2003. The irony is that POP:Sands of Time was considered something of a commercial failure as well, but apparently not as bad as Beyond Good and Evil. They did some god awful things to the Prince of Persia series to make it more marketable. I'm hoping BG&E 2, if it ever does get released can maintain some artistic integrity.
Here's some interesting(and also quite surprising) facts quoted from wikipedia that I didn't know of, granted who knows how credible anything on wikipedia is
"The game was first shown publicly at the 2002 Electronic Entertainment Expo, where it received negative reception. Originally more "artistically ambitious" and resembling games like Ico, the game was substantially changed in order to make it more commercially appealing. Jade, originally a teenage girl, was redesigned to be more powerful and fitting of her job. The game was also shortened by removing long periods of exploration due to Ancel's dislike of this aspect of gameplay in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The development team was "demoralized" by the changes, with Ancel commenting that the finished game resembled a sequel more than a reworking.[7] Prior to release, playable previews of the game were offered in movie theaters"

Back in the day I bought BG&E and Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy at the same time. I had a great deal of subsequent enjoyment playing through both games. Sphinx is another much-overlooked game. It plays well and has a great storyline.
If BG&E2 ever sees the light of day, I might have to buy a modern console.

you see that little number in that big paragraph you just posted? It links you to the bottom of the article, where you can find the
source cited. (look at the blue text on the side).
People should stop acting like wikipedia is nothing but a collection of random guesses. It's more reliable than people give it credit for.

You notice how in the footage for this and the original game as well, we always see Jade meditating. That's another thing I like about her character. She medidates and she fights with a stick. How many video game heroines can you think of like that LOL. No katanas, no machine guns, no rocket launchers, no angry stares. She's the antithesis of the typical female badass. Makes her unique

The question is, does this preserve the artistic spirit or does it keep the project understaffed and under funded?

I wouldn't worry. I've seen many a great movie or tv show done on a budget. It's all about making the most of what you have. People like Robert Rodriguez and Joss Whedon are pros at getting the most out of every resource and dollar they have
