Who makes the best HDDs?

And of course neither my computer nor drive has the necessary cable included to hook it up, so I have to drive all the way to fry's to buy a reasonably priced one ($17 for a best buy brand sata cable? Uh. . . no)

Wow, it didn't come with one? Did you buy a bare OEM drive in a plastic clamshell, or did you buy a retail in a bigger box?

I've noticed that almost all the HDDs on NewEgg are OEM.

Retail. I got it from bestbuy.

Wow, have companies gotten cheaper since the last time I bought a HD? Every retail boxed HD I've ever bought came with an IDE or Sata cable and mounting screws. I think the last one I bought even came with a molex to Sata power adapter.

Ok I went through a bunch of tutorials for getting windows to recognize the drive and they all mention the option "partition" or "initialize volume" yet the only option I had was "New simple disk" or "something simple disk" so I clicked it. Was this the right thing to pick?

Yeah, that's fine. If Drive Manager saw the drive and gave you those options, you were on the right track.

Wait, what did you use to create your partition(s)? You're doing it through Disk Management in Computer Management, right?

A simple disk (as oppose to dynamic) will be fine I guess. As far as I know, the only time you NEED to use dynamic is if you're setting up a RAID.

Well that seemed to be my only option so I guess I'm good. I've already captured about 20gigs to it and moved about 70 gigs worth of stuff onto it so it's doing what I wanted it to, so that's all I can ask I guess.

Yeah, if it's working and the space after you got it set up was just a bit under the advertised amount on the box, you're all good.
