I guess when people start doing their own research forum activity will drop severely
So giving a list of scrolling rpgs tells him which are good? If I ask which SNES platformers are good on the SNES are you just going to give me a mobygames browser list also? Plus it leaves out a lot two of my favorite side-scrolling rpgs. The Legend of Xanadu PCE SCD and Last Imperial Prince PC-FX.

The Legend of Xanadu II

I agree mobygames isn't perfect they should give users the option to filter by critical ratings as well. There's Mobyrank but it's not an accurate indicator of a game's worth. You can always add those two to the list as MB is a collaborative project. Some knowledge of simple search engines like Google or Bing can cut down a lot of those "suggest me games" topics.

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap for Sega Master System or Dragon's Curse for the TurboGrafx-16. They're both the same game, but it's the best side-scrolling action RPG of it's time.

So thanks to google, I now know you mean the obscure Phillips CD-i Zelda game, "Wand of Gamelon". Seriously, that game does not deserve an acronym.
hg101 had some rather good things to say about the Zeldea CDi games.

There are plenty of retro games like Zelda 2 that aren't strictly side scrolling rpg's. I'd start with River City Ransom, and ask for more suggestions after you've beaten it (the game).

co-sign on River City Ransom. Kunio-kun FTW!

just read through their review
very interesting stuff indeed

being a huge fan of the Zelda franchise, I (as most everyone else) have had an unfounded disdain for the CDi games, but this puts it into a whole new perspective

Wonderboy:

Monsterworld III and IV

both for Sega MegaDrive

IV is fan-translation, but as good as III

I know there have been mentions of Wonderboy in Monsterland, but the Monsterland games are separate from the original Wonderboy series (IIRC)

I think Dragon's trap/curse is the second one in the series

Wonderboy in Monsterland (which started the Monsterland chronicles) is available on anything from Arcade to C64 to SMS

I'll say Popful Mail as well, since it kicks all other sidescrolling RPG's asses.

:edit

nevermind, I'm rather confused about the Wonderboy series, so here's a Wikipedia entry

Wonderboy has to have the most confusing numbering of any game series. I mean geez, there's TWO Wonder Boy III's, both of which are completely different games!

Plus Wonder Boy V Monster World III, can there be a more confusing title?
