I was thinking about mass producing these, maybe at like 50 at a time and same for the genisis...

do you guys think people would be interested?

As long as the price is fair I'd buy one. I think a run of 50 would be okay between sites like this, Sega-16, Assembler Games, etc. Tough to say after that, you'll have to gauge interest.

Just the chip or the entire pimped out console? I'd be interested in the latter.

But I assume you meant the former.

yeah, just the former.

i couldn't afford to build 50 new consoles

price would be pretty much the price of parts plus postage... but then again, i dont know what i will do for labour of building it... maybe that'll be for free

oh my god I have been way too busy.

as soon as I recover 2 HDDs I should be getting back onto this and finish it once and for all. i've still gotta finish building my spdif mod for my sega megadrive 1 with 32x and Mega CD.

Anyone know where I can get a cheap platter exchanger tool and other assorted bits? i can't really continue with my work until I fix this... Pro services are just way too expensive so its diy for me.

Cheers

Just a little update though, I tried it out on my new Onkyo TX-SR608 - 7.2-Channel reciever... and Oh My Gawd was it nice! Lets just say I can hear when the CD is dirty...

Hey, I hate to ask questions without providing any productive input (especially since it seems you have an hdd emergency going on) but I am attempting this same modification on a Model 2 US Saturn and am a little confused as I am pretty new to this. I have my cs8406, my soic to dip converter board, and my toslink transmitter which, from that gamesx link appears to be what he used. Then he mentions the emph signal being inverted and i got totally lost, but it appears you have worked out the specifics with this thread. I'm wondering if you know whether or not this same 4050 Hex Buffer will work with the Model 2's PCM1710. Also, I'd LOVE to see the other side of your veroboard just to be certain of the correct connections to the hex buffer (but im sure its already tucked away in your saturn, never to be touched again). I'm also curious as to what type of resistors those are and why you used them because I don't remember the guy at the gamesx site saying anything about resistors. Another issue that makes me feel slightly confused about this project is that he mentions the capacitor between +5v and ground, did you add this? What kind of capacitor? He just says small but, me being a total noob, I have no idea which ones are small or large or whatever. Thanks for your time, I hope I'm not asking too much.

I'm pretty sure any hex buffer or NOT logic gate will do the trick... though I'm sure they all have different performance charecteristics and pin assignments or whatever... just so long as it inverts the signal you'll be fine... its not really needed actually but its good to be hooked up properly i guess.

I did use resistors and I took heaps of pics too so I'll post them up. I can't remember the exact value resistor i used but you can read the colour bands when I post up the pics. The reason to use resistors is to step down the signal voltage so it can be used to output a spdif through RCA. the higher voltage is required to power the LED for the toslink.

As far as the capacitors, I also used one... I think I used a 220uF cap or something... this is basicaly just to stop the chip from getting any oscilations.
