Maybe you're running into more dead carts because of static electricity discharge? I don't really have to worry about that here in the swamp.

Have you tried replacing the capacitor and resistor on a dead cart? Or, have have tried putting the mask ROM on a known working cart?

not yet. school consumes 90% of my life right now. the other 10% involves eating and sleeping, with a few occasional gaming breaks in there. but i plan on trying the things that were suggested in this thread during my spring break.

2 of my dead carts will load up to the screen with the white lettering on it. i have never read it so i don't know what it says. but i am sure anybody who has played a sega game will know what i am talking about. but, after the white letter screen the screen just stays black.

any idea on what is up with this?

There are a few unlicensed games that will only work on a non TMSS Genesis. Seeing the 'Produced by or under license from Sega" Means the console has TMSS. I'm not sure ig they show that text and freeze or do nothing at all. Maybe you keep buying more copies of the same game that's not compatible with your TMSS Genesis? Are they early Accolade carts?

You know at this point I'm going to say you either aren't cleaning your carts correctly or the contacts inside your Genny need cleaning.

Either use a Genesis System Cleaning Kit or the Felt insert from an SNES/Genesis Cleaning Kit to clean the contacts of your Genny's cartridge slot.

it must be the games.

i'd say that all of my genesis machines are in tip top shape. all of my genesis machines that are not in use i keep in thick plastic bags, and my primary genesis machine that i use to game on i actually keep a cart inserted in the slot. now the cart doesn't actually have the circuit board in it. i take it out, resemble the cart, and just place it in the slot so the bottom basically engulfs the contact connectors without putting wear and tear on them. so basically, when not in use, nothing is getting to the contacts of the machine. maybe a bit excessive, but whatever.

in fact, the contacts on the alex kidd cart does look worn out. i am going to have to go and pick up very fine sand paper and attack the pins a bit to try to polish them up.

It doesn't matter how much you clean or maintain your Genesis systems if you don't clean the cartridge slot itself.

Trust me, I've revived quite a few "dead" consoles that way.

It would definitely be worth giving it a shot. The worst that could happen is you end up with cleaner pins on your console but the games still don't work. Not a bad outcome.
