The point I was trying to make is that if you're going to say that drugs are eeeeeEEEEviiiil, you might as well treat cigarettes and alcohol the same way.
Personally I do look at them the same way. The difference is that the majority of society has determined that alcohol and cigarettes are ok for consumption. Making a legal thing illegal has a lot of repercussions; look at Prohibition. Conversely, because other drugs are already illegal there is a large percentage of people who will never encounter it specifically because of that illegal state, so maintaining it as illegal is easier.
Marijuana itself is pretty damn safe. It kills an average of 0 people a year, while alcohol and tobacco combined kill over 400,000 a year, and this is not including accidents while under the influence of alcohol. These dangers and problems arise as result of prohibition.
Find me a public opinion from a reputable addictionologist that states that marijuana is "pretty damn safe".
