It will run original xbox games, but I think you need to patch them or burn them a special way. They also have to go on a dual layer DVD which is sort of a waste. You won't be playing them off the hard drive like you could with a modded xbox 1.
If you're banned from live and don't care about online then you don't need to worry about updates, just use it. There is no way to tell what is installed without taking everything apart again and connecting the DVD drive to a PC.

If I were you I'd just get an original Xbox, surely that is cheaper and less hassle than modding a 360 just to play backup xbox games. This seems like the the most assbackwards way of going about it. Then there's the possibility that the game you want to play isn't even compatible with the 360 anyway. With a softmodded xbox you're guaranteed that the games will work (as long as you don't have a shitty thomson drive and shitty media).
