I got to Scar Face and ran out of continues. Great game. The gameplay is fairly repetitive, but the fact that they keep changing up the enemy patterns keeps it interesting. My only problem with this game is that it sometimes crosses the line into being unfair, particularly when a boss just charges you and you can't out run him or redirect him. Mostly though, it's just a good clean challenge trying to keep track of the million and one things on the screen. I also love the trashiness of it all too.

I've beaten this on the SNES. It was super hard at first, but eventually i got a good sense for the game and stopped getting myself killed constantly. In most of the rooms you can just stick to the corner.

You can play it on the Home Console Twin Stick mode just like the arcade.
Undocumented Menu Setup or simple mod depending which version you own.

I wrote a Twin Stick Mod Guide: Home Console Method article here:

I don't have any moments in my gaming memory that will ever compare to the feeling of beating the second loop (turbo) on hard with a friend AND getting 10 keys (therefore the pleasuredome) on the turbo loop.

We just had to know what lie beyond.

And we found out.

edit: forgot to mention, the best way to play the NES version is emulate it one NesterDC and use two dreamcast controllers, very easy for two people to play using four controllers.

On that Midway Arcade disc there is an interview where Turmell claims he (and others) have done this...

As far as I know beating it alone with one credit is incredibly hard and a bit luck based because one of the bosses will kill you everytime. I read in Twin Galaxies that getting past that boss was only achieved on video a couple of times and the game has not been completed on video on one credit.

I dare think there is no bad version of Smash TV. Even the lowly NES version is quite a lot of fun and unique to play with two controllers at once.

Yeah, this post is old, but speaking from experience, I can say that the Master System version is pretty awful.
