They didn't get the sound right. Head over to the Sega-16 forums for more impressions.

Yeah, some games the sounds is fine, but in Sonic 2 you can hear it's really off. Also, I haven't played it, is that slowdown always there in Gunstar Heroes?

I also noticed that, like the FC Mobile, the screen is a bit too wide, causing the graphics to be stretched a bit. This looks the worst on Shining in the Darkness, as it screws with the text a bit.

Does anyone know what the name of the game is where it was the robot who could go into the motorcycle and blast a bunch of stuff?

The Youtube video was a direct feed, so that's what it'll sound like with headphones.

Thats a shame. The poster of the video is commenting in this thread at Sega-16:
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread ... 73&page=52

He speaks highly of the RetroGen, but then again he also owns and sells them at his Gamesboro website, so his opinion could be biased. Another user, named QuickSciFi, has one and is loving it, although he also seems to not care too much about poorly emulated sound.

I don't want to piss on their parade, good on them that they enjoy it, however poor sound is a deal breaker. I watched the direct feed video and then played Sonic 2 on my Nomad, the difference was night and day!

Bottom line of the RetroGen seems to be:
-Great screen
-Great battery life
-Shit sound

Its a shame the sound isnt better but seeing as a Nomad will cost me well over £100 I think I'm going to go with the retroGen. I'm not so bothered about the sound, the screen is a big deal to me though

There's a thread over at Atari Age forums http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/146264-retro-gen-portable-sega-genesis-mega-drive/ that is discussing this device. A couple of the forum members are selling this system.

What's interesting from reading this thread is that there may be a cartridge add-on that will accept SD cards for home brews. There's speculation if the cartridge would work on a regular Genesis/MegaDrive. There's also some photo shots of a plugin TV game controller that is shaped like Sonic's head in the thread. Pretty cool looking device.

StoneAgeGamer wrote:Hyperkin's version looks similar, but there are differences. Hyperkin's is coming out a little later and I believe actually has built-in games as well. As for the SD card port. There is NO, I repeat NO, SD card port on either model. There will be a way for you to use an SD cards on these systems, but it will most likely be a separately purchased peripheral (special cart). I heard homebrew games will be encouraged though. Unfortunetely my hands are tied right now, I can't say too much because the information I was given was confidential. The minute I can, I will.
