Same here. That's why RPGs drive me crazy. I usually play the game once, and then do it again with a walkthrough to get the 60% of the game I missed. Nothing annoys me more than having to do something in between events in a game with absolutely nothing to tip me off. Square does this a lot.
Hah, that's what I love about these games. I will spend hours on side quests. If I only have like a half hours I will turn the game on and work on a side quest since I don't have the couple of hours it sometimes takes to complete a dungeon (water temple!). Finally, I will remember there is more to the game and move on.

Yes listen to him. link's awakening DX is a wonderful game. some things were a bit strange at first (like the chain chomp in the game) but once you get into it, it most certainly worth it.

Majora's Mask has a special place in my heart, as it was the first Zelda game I ever owned. I remember opening my Christmas present and then saying "crap, I need an expansion pack!"

I'm playing through it again right now, and while it doesn't seem as great as it did back in the day, it's still a fantastic game.
Oh, and the music is the best out of the series, period.

I think it's the time constraints of the game in the earlier stages that turned me off. I HATE being rushed in games. Games that force timelimits, especially early on just infuriate me. The time system in the game just pissed me off because I couldn't explore the world in my own time, I couldn't relax while playing it. Always that nagging issue of time running out. I know that later in the game you get a mask or something that lets you control time but I just couldn't figure out what I had to do early on in the game in enough time without getting a game over. I just got fucked off with the game and shelved it.
I could use a walkthrough but I hate using them (apart from something like Pokemon, where it's impossible to find everything without a walkthrough). I just don't see the point. I'd much rather play the game and explore it myself and the time limit just ruins the game for me.

I have MM & OOT but I haven't played them yet. So what happens when the time expires? Do you have to start over from the beginning and do everything over again?

Niode hit my biggest issue with Majoras Mask and Phantom Hourglass right on the head. The Zelda titles are adventure games. Ones you are supposed to loose hours to just wondering around in. Both MM and PH had these odd timelimits that made them, for lack of a better word, pushy.

That's quite odd I never noticed that there was actual time constraints in Phantom Hourglass until you just mentioned it. I guess that's a sign of a better designed mechanic. I didn't mind it so much when it was only every so often that you restricted by your time in a specific dungeon. However when the entire game underpins a 72 hour limit on you and when that limit is only several real hours long. I guess you might as well have made the game 5 hours long and left it at that, because I got frustrated after dying for the second time because of running out of time or not doing things in the right order. I like to take my time over puzzles in zelda games. I don't want to resort to a guide to solve a puzzle, that's completely pointless and unrewarding. You might as well watch somebody speedrun the game for all the benefit you get out of it.

I guess I'll have to start playing this sooner than later to experience all of what MM has to offer. It would be nice if the Zelda games had an elapsed timer so you can see how much real time you spent on the game. That's one feature that I liked about Paper Mario 64 & Paper Mario TTYD. I have no idea on how much time I spent on Legend of Zelda: LTTP or the Minish Cap.

Hmm... I think they may. Not sure, but I seem to remember a couple of the games, at least, telling you how long you have been playing.
I agree that MM is a different Zelda game and has to be enjoyed that way. For some players, as soon as they discover this, that's it they're done. That's cool, but for me it was interesting experiencing a different type of game with my favorite characters. I think it had quite a good story and ending.
