Is it dangerous to rotate a CRT monitor?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I remember in school me and my friend having so much fun with the degauss button on the monitors in our computing room.

They would go months on end without being degaussed seeing as no one knew what it meant or how to do it.

This meant that when we found out about it (by chance I think), the degauss would be an absolute blast.

Me and my friend used to point monitors facing each other and then degauss one, and the blast would be so intense that the monitor facing it would ripple as well.

^Lol

In my school we had to degauss the CRTs when we rotated them for MAME while on. They still run fine.

How often are monitors supposed to be degaussed anyway? :?:

Just go to a Good Will and pay the $5-10 for a 15 inch. Heck my local one had some 22s for $10 on Monday. If you were closer to ATL I would just give you a couple - Ive got 1 spare 22, buddy has 4.

The pickings in my are a seem to be slim as my goodwill doesn't exactly get the cream of the crop when it comes to monitors, for example: the last monitor there in 'good shape' (dents and scratches galore) was a Flat screen Compaq monitor for 'on sale' for $50.

In that French documentary about shmups, there was a Cave employee programming a game with a rotated CRT monitor. Guess it's fine then.

A shmup documentary actually sounds really interesting.

Some degauss automatically on start up (most newer arcade monitors do this when they power up). There's not really such a thing as degaussing "too frequently".

The better answer is to do it whenever it's necessary. If you see colour distortion, then do so. If not, don't bother.
