OCZ brand usb sticks usually have very good read and write times. I bought a 4Gb from Newegg.com a while ago.

Look at the specifications tab for each one on Newegg. That will show you the read / write times for each one. Pick up one with the smallest numbers.

Unfortunately, they don't tell the specs.
And I don't know why more manufacturers don't make caps you can put on the end as well

I think they used to, but everyone lost the caps, so they gave up on it.

But how do you lose the cap if you put it on the end when you use it?
I love the design of my current one -- its just so stinkin slow

You could always buy a new one and shove the guts into the old one's case.

I know this thread's a little old, but Ars Technica just posted a review of several large flash drives with performance testing. There's a very small drive with peppy performance that would be perfect for your needs, Racketboy.
