yeah. I've heard great things about Contra 4. I made a big list of potential retro games I'd like to play in the near future, and am kind of running through it semi-chronologically. I don't necessarily plan to play/beat every game on my big list, but am considering each as I get to it based on factors such as how cheaply I can attain it; how in the mood I am for that genre, etc. It's all pretty loose. Super C was kind of a *maybe* game, and was sort of there because it'd give me an excuse to pick up Contra 4. If it's kind of a pain to even unlock it, then I'll be skipping Super C, but definitely still have Contra 4 on my keep-an-eye-out for list itself.

You can safely skip Super C. It’s not that great. Operation C, however...

I don't think I'm the biggest run-n-gun fan, anyway. I like the original Contra just fine (the NES port anyway). Operation C is pretty great, though. I was always a fan of that one, yeah.

What? I love Super C. The soundtrack is fantastic, the fireball weapon is super powerful, and it's just a fun ride, even if it isn't quite as cool as the original.

Super C gets a thumbs up from me. I finally got through Contra, Super C, Operation C, Hard Corps, and 3 last year and loved them all.

I need to get through Contra Rebirth, 4, and the PS2 ones.

Man! I should have posted in the unpopular opinions thread, I guess!

......

So...cool story...I bought a second hand 2DS the other day ($20!) because: (1) my daughter wants to play some of the more recent Pokémon games; (2) my son wants to play some Lego Ninjago games; and (3) I want to play LoZ Tri Force Heroes with my children. (We’re gonna need another 2DS!) Anyway... the system came with a bunch of games pre-loaded by the previous owner. One of those is LoZ Four Swords Anniversary!

It is one of my goals to play through all of the LoZ games - even the CDI ones - at some point, but I was not sure I would ever be able t9 get through Four Swords. The original version is unplayable without multiple people, and at this point in my life, I doubt I’ll ever spend six to fifteen hours in a room playing a LoZ game with three other people all of whom own GBAs, copies of the game, and GBA link cables. LoZ Four Swords Anniversary offers a single-player experience, but it was only available for a limited time and delisted years ago. Accordingly, I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to meet my goal. Now, however... :D

My just reward for getting my kids into video games, I guess!

I am of the opinion that Super C is just as good as the original contra. I feel that it is probably the most under rated game of all time as it rarely gets mentioned and almost never gets the credit it deserves. Definitely not a game that you should skip if you are into the original contra.

4 is a great game, very tough if I remember right, but havent played it in a really long time. It makes pretty cool use of the dual screen as well.

@xeograd: PS2 contra (shattered soldier) is completely insane, I think it is the hardest game in the series, there is a 30 life code, and you definitely should use the 30 life code, the problem is that when you continue(and you will) you don't get the 30 lives back. I beat it last year but expect to die and retry a lot, like any contra game, once you learn it, it becomes manageable but there is just one kick ass set piece after the other with a trillion ways to die on each one.

Has anyone here ever played the ps1 contras to completion? They are both trash games, and I boot them up every now and again hoping they are less trashy then I remember but they never are. It is actually astounding how bad these games are, if you think about konami franchises that made the jump to the ps1 we have symphony of the night, which to this day is still the best metroidvania ever, Metal Gear Solid, which was just amazing on every level and completely innovative for its day, and contra games which were both abyssmal beyond belief. It is sad how bad contra got the shaft.

So awhile ago, while I was cleaning my PS1 PAL Clock Tower disc, I heard a crack.

Yeah... The disc had cracked in the middle, now the crack remained on the inner rim where there is no data, so the game played just fine, for a time...

Just tried it today and it stops at the black PS1 screen during boot, I checked the disc and the crack moved into the data section...

Well I figure no biggie, I'll just buy another disc, disc only should be relatively cheap right?

Wrong! The game is apparently pretty expensive, at least the PAL version is, even disc only.

Since I bought the game at launch, I had no idea of its current value, never had to look it up.

So lesson learned, be very careful when cleaning discs in the future, though I didn't apply any crazy pressure, and especially no pressure that I hadn't applied to many other discs before, after this case, I'll treat them like they're made out of dandelions.

And god knows how many games in my collection are worth more than I'm aware of, the majority of my collection was bought at launch after all, and unless is a marquee title like Suikoden II, is really hard to know value since I never sell anything and there's no real reason to look up prices of games I already own otherwise.

My Favorite Local Video Game Store is closing in February.

There are several used/independent game stores in my area as I live in one of the largest selections of them in the country.

But, the one that is closing, was my favorite. He had the best selections at reasonable prices. He also had Reproductions as well and was the coolest dude. I almost worked for him when I was unemployed.

Thankfully, there are other stores (and Ebay) and the gaming convention he started will still be going. But, still, I'm going to missing walking into his store and seeing what is available.
