Been watching a lot of westerns lately. I don't think anyone around here loves westerns like I do, so I don't post about them.
But last night I watched this:
Holy shit this was a cool movie. I don't want to talk about its plot, because mentioning anything at all is a potential plot spoiler. But if you enjoy unique and intelligent movies just watch this.

You'd be surprised...One of the last movies I watched was the absolutely glorious:
Django Kill...If You Live, Shoot! (1967), which is pretty far down the spaghetti western rabbit hole. (It is also a very solid spaghetti western, and I recommend it to fans of the genre.)

As far as westerns go, the last few I watched were to finish the Sabata trilogy:
I enjoyed all three, highly recommended fun stuff.
I've never watched the Sabata films. How do they stack up the the likes of Sartana?

Sartana is more serious. Sabata is a bit goofier and comedic, but not in a dumb way. You can tell Lee Van Cleef and Yul Brynner both had fun playing the part. There's also an emphasis on specialized gadgets, like customized guns with special contraptions. The further into the Sabata films you go, the more pronounced these aspects become. The Sabata trilogy isn't A+ western material by any means, but if you're into the genre, the films are a good time.

Good to know. I was wondering if it was Van Cleef at his best or if it was gonna be more like God's Gun territory.
I do love some Yul Brynner though.

My wife and I watched "Team Foxcatcher" last night - a Netflix documentary on John du Pont and his spiral into lunacy and ultimatelythe murder of gold medal wrestler Dave Schultz. It was riveting and something that gripped the nation for about 3-days, only to be forgotten days later (by me, and I presume most).
I didn't realize after conviction he spent 14 years in prison before dying of natural causes. He was only 58 when he went in - he looked 75.
I never knew he sponsored a seniors circuit for free-style wrestling. It was absolutely fascinating that everyone was in on it - and this person, with all this money, and education, and you'd think paid minders, never realized the entire tournaments were staged for him to win - how could he possibly not tell these people were diving for him? So fascinating - thousands of people in the stands watching these events and the entire thing done for his amusement and staged for him to win, to keep him happy and supporting wrestling on a national level.
He develops a phobia of black - relates it to death. Gets rid of all of his black clothes...ok. Fires ALL black staff, including Olympic Medalist wrestlers - all of them...and none of the white people, the friends, compatriots, do a thing...they all, collectively, put their own interests first and justify it as "John being John" and they just move on as if nothing happened. A dozen plus friends, family and staff one day just exiled off the property - and no one bats an eye - business as usual.
The number of people he paid and supported, gave housing to, all to feel close toa team, to be involved in wrestling on that level - it is such and odd odd thing. The fascination with guns. The God-complex developed over years and years of yes-men doing his bidding at his beck and call.
...and the saddest most fascinating part, the Bulgarian that Dave Schultz convinced to come over, befriended, bonded, lived with, raised their families together...abandoned the Schultz family after the murder...and wound up inheriting 80% of the 430 million dollar fortune. Truly fascinating and disturbing.
I haven't seen the hollywood movie version, but I will now.
