Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City - PC

A friend and I bought this game on sale to play through co-op. We both knew it reviewed poorly, but still a cheap co-op game was what we were looking for.

At the end of the first few levels we did not understand why it was received so badly, sure it is not the normal style of play for a Res Evil game as it is a straight third person shooter, but it was enjoyable enough, not amazing but enjoyable to play.

By the end of the fourth level or so, we knew why. The game is really repetitive with an uninspired story that tries way too hard to tie itself in with Resident Evil 2 and 3. If the gameplay being repetitive was not enough for you, they start recylcing levels later on in that bullshit 'quick we need to backtrack for some reason'.

Bad game that was raised to being average because I was playing on a Mic with my buddy, having a laugh at how bad it is, once GFWL goes offline, if they don't patch it, the game will not even have the co-op feature it was made for.

Batman: Arkham Origins - PC
I was skeptical going into it. I have played the first two and I loved them both, so I was worried at what a change in developer would do.

The gameplay mechanics are largely the same, the fighting is a bit different, but once you get use to it, I never had any problems taking down massive groups of thugs.

The story is a much darker one and I think it is better for it, Batman is more of a badass, at first I thought he was breaking peoples necks as when he knocks people out there is a god awful cracking noise, but I guess not, which is a good thing as it would be out of character.

Some of the side mission (Most Wanted in game) revolving around other Batman Villains were awesome and broke up the gameplay quite a lot, I particularly loved The Mad Hatter's.

My biggest complaint with the game is how much 'useless' side content you have to push through in order to fully upgrade your bat-suit, like doing stupid combos or things in fights, there were just too many different ways to level up, which sounds good but it was overwhelming, more so considering how boring some of it was.

Overall I logged 18 hours into the game doing everything I could do, other than those stupid ass enigma collect-a-thon, which were easier than the riddles from City, but also far more boring. I enjoyed my time with it.

84. Gods (SNES)(Platformer)
85. ActRaiser (SNES)(Platformer/Sim Hybrid)

Who is your god now?

ActRaiser is such a bizarre combination of genres, graphical styles, controls, and gameplay that it's tough to really wrap my mind about it. The two sections of it are wholly separate yet have important influence over the other, with the platformer enabling the simulation aspects to grow and advance, while the simulation provides new magical abilities, magic uses, extra lives, and increased hit points for the platforming sections. They're strangely symbiotic despite the fact that the two are worlds apart in terms of visual appearance and design. I enjoy both, though I also admit both have problems: the platformer features a grueling difficulty while the sim suffers from a clunky interface made worse by the constant long-winded text soliloquies about nearly everything from your cherub helper. But it's rewarding to watch your towns grow as your townspeople solve their problems, and the platforming segments feature a large variety of visual designs as well as some entertaining boss battles.

It does feel at times that the platformer is difficult for no reason though, particularly in the final stage against Tanzra's boss minions. I know I've beaten them before, but do all of the game's major bosses really need their speed doubled? While this doesn't affect some of the bosses as much and actually makes the mummy sarcophagus easier in my opinion, it seems like an unnecessary step following what has already been several grueling rounds. And more than once I grumbled and swore at the tree level...which turned into outright rage and screaming in Professional mode. Professional mode is a harder version of the platforming levels, only unlocked after beating the game proper. The weakest enemies have their health boosted, running out of lives makes you start over from the beginning as opposed to simply going back to the sim, and magic has been removed entirely for a much more challenging experience. It's an added challenge for fans of the platforming section and is a pleasant diversion to extend the life of the game.

Do I like the game overall? Yes, actually. The music is good (and the Tree level tune reminds me a lot of Super Star Wars), and ActRaiser is solidly built. The game is an interesting fusion of two very different genres, but it has character and feels like a satisfying accomplishment to beat. And while it does feature heavy religious overtones, ActRaiser never feels heavy-handed or preachy in its piety.

But did I beat Professional mode?

Fun little game. It's sort of like an old school Lucasarts PC Adventure game, but designed with a console in mind. The game also has some light platforming and a few stealth sequences, so it's a fusion of 3 genres I guess. The writing is pretty funny and the art style is this cool sort of thing where everyone looks like flat paper cut outs. It's a very bright and colorful looking game and the fact that everything is 2D adds a little nostalgia if you've played the classic, 2D, Lucasarts adventure games like Day of the Tentacle. In fact, this is pretty much a Lucasarts PC Adventure game filtered through the mind of an indie developer.

As far as cons go, the puzzles are really easy for anyone who has experience with PC Adventure games. And the stealth sections get kind of annoying in the last two chapters

Play this game for the humor. That's its biggest strength. It's that Tim Schafer style humor and the game's jokes mostly revolve around reading people's mind and hearing what kinds of hilarious things they are thinking.

One of my favorite snes games that I beat at least once a year (usually with the handle Sirloin Chop or SirMIxaLot). Every song on Actraiser's soundtrack is incredible and the graphics were the best at the time.

Finishing ActRaiser 1 & 2 (as well as some other Quintet titles) is a goal of mine for next year. What I've played so far is awesome.

2 is pretty weird. It's a bit more straight up Castlevania or something. Doesn't have any of the world building elements from the first game I'm pretty sure.

It doesn't but a world map that's a bit annoying to navigate to find the right area to go to next. Graphics and sound live up to the original, but the control needs to be better especially since it's just a platformer now.

Actraiser 2 took everything I loved about the first installment and threw it out the window. The Actraiser sequel sounds and looks pretty but lacks originality and fun. Sorry for the sour grapes, but that game disappointed me big time.

I've played a bit and the most striking (and worst) thing about the game were those awful gliding controls. Ugh.

That and always wondering "Where is the ground?". I hate playing the landing guessing game.
