In actuality, Wikipedia is fairly reliable on most things when it comes to cursory background information. I wouldn't cite it in a research paper or a debate, but for just answering a random question or something of the sort, it's a pretty dang good go-to source. Most articles (at least about things of any import, so not millennials and who is and isn't one) are written and/or edited by grad students and college professors these days.

If you were born in 1979, what generation are you supposed to belong to?
If you were born in 1998, what generation are you supposed to belong to?

1979 is a bit old to be a millennial, since that's living through the entirety of the 80's. I wouldn't consider that a millennial, but that's more of a personal identification I guess.
1998 is definitely a millennial though. I'm not sure what else it could be, since someone born then would be turning 18 now. I, personally, consider even 2000 and 2001 to be millennials, even.

Edit: Ugh....I knew MTV Classic was going to be bad but man it can't get any worse. Just watched about 10 seconds of their live feed they shared from MTV and yuck. Broods chick has no singing ability even the autotune fails to cover it up o_O not to mention the background can't cover it up. What is going on with viacom? I knew they were going crazy but this is rediculous

It's tough to set generational rules because the edges always blend together in weird ways. And even within those labeled generations, there can be stark contrasts between those born earlier versus later. For instance, many of the folks born pre-1988 will remember a world without mass Internet and seeing the transition in the schools and home, or that our early development was during the waning days of the Cold War. Watching the development of cellphones and social media has been fascinating, but I also remember what the world was like before.
I have a pair of friends that use the death of Kurt Cobain as the dividing line for millennials, though I feel that's a little late. But it makes for an interesting distinction between the two portions of the supposed same generation.

So those born before Cobain's death are Generation X, and those born after are Millennials? I don't know if I can get behind that one. I mean, I was born in 1979, and my brother was born in 1987, but he definitely belongs to a different generation than me, yet we were both born before Cobain died.
