@CavZee: What Gunstar Green said. You could loosely divide the series up into 3 arcs, 1 which is about half and up to the timeleap, then there's two distinctive arcs. The part you're at (I'm guessing), I wasn't big on either, but the last stretch is incredible.
Yeah, this is essentially how I look at the series:
Arc 1 is classic super robots.
Mazinger Z, Getter Robo
Arc 2 is "real" robots.
Gundam, Macross
Arc 3 is modern super robots.
GaoGaiGar, Shin Getter Robo
When you realize it's a love letter to the entire genre it makes it that much cooler.

I should have Project A-Ko and Macross in my mail box tomorrow - looking forward to watching those as I've heard good things. Been itching to watch Evangelion again too, as I tend to do so every summer. For some reason I thought the entire Rebuild series had been released already, but it looks like I'm incorrect.
In sad news, my local Best Buy no longer carries anime. Not sure why, I assume they simply weren't moving enough units.
The A-Ko movies are a lot of fun. Don't expect much in the way of serious plots but they're still plenty entertaining today.
For Macross you've really got to keep a few things in mind to enjoy it today. The limited animation budget which got stretched thinner as more episodes were ordered and the fact that it seems very cliche by today's standards since it started many of tropes used in later space opera and mecha anime (At least the ones that Gundam hadn't already codified). You've also got some 1980's Japanese sexism in spots.
When it started it was supposed to be a
parody of Gundam though this is only apparent in the first episode or two.
If you enjoy Macross I suggest looking into Patlabor. It's a little confusing since there's two timelines (OVA and movies timeline and TV series timeline) but both are worth checking out. It's a very decidedly different take on the mecha genre from the same time period focusing on mecha as tools and part of modern life, well... 1980's "modern life" anyway. The OVA and first movie are also pre-Ghost in the Shell Mamoru Oshii.
