My company runs a light management structure, we don't have redundancies, some positions can backfill others, but many can't. If there's an emergency in my area, i'm getting called and expected to be in in the most reasonable time possible.

Don't get me wrong - i'm not saying Luke's boss isn't being unreasonable considering circumstances, i'm not saying it even sounds like an emergency, i'm saying it isn't surprising to me that he's getting emails / phone calls while on PTO.

I'd have to check federal law, but I believe management has to approve PTO and has the right to ask what it is for. I know that's the case at my employer, and at my father's employer which has a strong union (BN Railroad) .

My contract strictly labels a "day off" as a "day off without any job related responsibilities".

Do I have to answer or respond to emails? No. Will this reflect negatively on my performance although I have PTO? Maybe. Was I called directly to speak a business matter that doesn't reflect sales numbers and could lead to larger sales? Yes.

That's why I was pissed off. I also don't like the idea of "you shouldn't expand existing customer business". "We don't want to grow our business with existing customers" makes zero sense.

Let it go Luke, let it go. Enjoy the weekend, your birthday is around the corner, and the weather is gorgeous and so is your wife.

Thanks Hobes.

I choose my words very carefully, especially when dealing with the Hollywood types, but yeah. "Devastating" is the word that sums it up.

On a lower level I'd say "this really blows", but forgetting to get gas for your lawn mower while filling up your car "really blows". This situation truly is devastating, emotionally and physically.

I'll get past it in a quick fast with a hurry on top. Life is too short to let big things let you down.

Luke, I'm so sorry to hear that. One of my best friend's wife recently had a miscarriage, and I know how hard it was on them.

:D / :( I recently got a new job, as some of you might know (I posted about it a few weeks ago). Well, I just finished my third day at the new job. To sum it up...

They're moving to a larger location. Luckily it's only 10 minutes from the old location. Day 1 I went to the new location for a bit to help with some things, then went back to the old location and briefly trained for my position.

Day 2 I went to the new location and ended up staying their the entire day with the boss boss, being his go-to guy for whatever little things needed to be done. The entire day was filled with all these little things that needed to be done. It was hot and muggy outside, and the building is so long I must have walked miles and miles by the end of the day. I guess it was good though that I could make a good first impression with the boss right off the bat.

Day 3, today, was kinda nutty. Today was day 1 (of 2) of the actual move so everything was crazy anyway. On top of trying to help pack things up and whatnot, I also had to be trained in a rush. I was asked to come in at 7am, but still stay till 6pm. The reason, from 2pm on I was left by myself to run logistics. So I came in early basically to try and learn as much as I could before I was by myself. Wasn't so bad though, because of the move there were no orders, just dispatching. I *think* I did OK. But it was kinda rough after yesterday having to do 11 hours (or whatever it was) today.

So it's been kinda nutty my first 3 days. Tomorrow, I'm hoping the day will be filled with just setting up the new logistics office and warehouse, which shouldn't be too bad. After that, I'm off, and hoping that after the weekend I can start the next week and actually train for my job lol.

:D It's all good, though. My brother worked for this company for a few years (he recently left) and from everything he's told me it's sounds like a great company to work for. On top of that, the logistics manager is my brother's girlfriend's best friend. My co-worker in logistics is my brother's girlfriend's brother. And a cousin of mine was hired about a month ago in another department. I've known these people for years. I've known details about the lab for years, and have been there a few times too. So it's really weird. I started working there, but had none of the first-day-jitters. It feels like I've worked there all along almost.

At the same time, it feels weird not working in the supermarket anymore. I worked there for almost 10 years, from the age of 17, so my entire adult life. I don't think I've fully realized that I'm never going back to work there. It's a hard feeling to describe. I kinda feel like I'm just on vacation from there or something. Last night I literally had to think to myself before going to bed, "OH! I'm not going to the supermarket tomorrow!"

So the last two paragraphs together, everything just feels weird right now. Surreal.

:( : I don't miss working for the supermarket, but I do miss the people already. I worked with some great people there. Some I've known for years, or the entire time I've been working there, and a few people even longer than that. Luckily, it's close to my house so I can also go there for visits. I might go there over the weekend to pickup a few things I forgot and drop off a key I forgot I had.

Oh, the reason I was by myself today is because the logistic manager's sister is getting married. So she was off for the wedding, and my co-working had to leave at 2 for the wedding. Which makes me think, it would be funny if my brother and his girlfriend ever get married. The entire logistics department will have to shut down for like 3 days lol.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text rant, but that was my last 3 days.

Yeah I can understand the part about the supermarket. Yeah I'm not leaving HT but I'm going to miss all the people I've been working with once I start wednesday at the new place and really start learning to do it all.

Text rant was worth reading, so good on you.

And thanks!

Outlook not so good, but hopefully all this news will make my wife realize we need more sexy time. I can't be mad at that.

Sorry Luke. I empathize. My wife had three miscarriages. All you can do is hold her and let her cry.

Thanks, and yup.

I don't say a thing, just do what I can to comfort her.

Very sorry to hear Luke. I can't even imagine.

I don't care what your position or what job you have, salaried or hourly, if your boss knew why you took the day off and called you about something trivial, something that could wait till Monday or even Saturday morning that is showing totally disregard for you. And this is coming from a guy that closed a deal from the hospital the day his son was born, scheduled deliveries while his daughter was in surgery(very, very minor) and calmed down an angry client while on vacation at Disney. My point being is that I don't get days off and understand sometimes you have to deal with things in a difficult situation, but unless it was an emergency and involved something only you had the information about and the called started with, "Luke I am beyond sorry to bother you today, but..." I look at as total disrespect. Of course this is my opinion and I don't know anything other than what you posted or your dealings with this person in the past.

:) Buddy of mine who does a lot of ebaying finally came over to settle up some trades/etc we had been talking about for a while. He brought:

Halloween for the 2600
TMNT Tournament Fighters for Genesis
Out of this World for Genesis

(Those 3 were sadly just to test on my systems -- he HAS all the systems, but typically it's easier for me to hook them up than him because wires get all tangled everywhere and I'm more of a gamer than him, so it's more likely to be organized at my place)

A Wii Fit Balance Board -- I had never gotten one, so for like 10 bucks why not?
2 different N64's -- he was trading one of my spares for one of his, since NEITHER of mine are able to be RGB modded. I knew the serial could give you a good guess as to whether it had the proper chip to be modded, but he brought 2 just in case and I did a teardown to verify. This was a freebie.
*3* broken Dreamcasts -- I got my GDEMU recently and went "Why waste a perfectly working Dreamcast like I have? Might as well get one with a dead drive." He only marks his systems working or not working, not what's wrong, so he brought 3. One turned out to be what I needed, a second appeared working but with a VERY loud fan, the third had dead controller ports. Also freebies, and he scooted out of there saying he never wanted them back, though I think I'm going to exchange the controller ports on the loud fan one for the one that's dead and see if I can make it working overall, he'll probably appreciate that.

And a Suikoden II disc only that he wanted me to play through over the next month, month and a half so he can be sure it works. OH DARN, *please* don't make me play a pretty good RPG. What EVER shall I do? :D Plus as of Monday at 8 am I'm off for 2 weeks sooo I guess I know what I'M playing. (to be fair, when he mentioned it I confused Suikoden II for Shenmue II and was way more excited about Shenmue, but I'll enjoy Suikoden too)
