I would just like to openly state that Limp Bizkit, KoRn, and the Butthole Surfers are all easily among my absolute favorite bands of all time. There's little I enjoy more than a solid Fred Durst-sung ballad... I don't care what that makes people think about me.

See, to my mind Butthole Surfers and Korn were both fairly innovative/influential/talented in carving out a particular sound in the rock music landscape. They were musicians who mattered. I always saw Limp Bizkit as severely derivative/manufactured/insincere in comparison. I'm open to hearing the counter argument, but I just know that I haven't ever had much respect for Durst as an artist (I can kinda respect the marketing machine that is Limp Bizkit, Inc., though). ...and he has always dressed like a twelve year old to conceal his male pattern baldness. I've had friends who started to go bald in their early twenties. You know what they did to hide it? Not a God damned thing, and that earned instant respect.

KoRn is by far the more talented band. But LB has its place for stupid/fun music. Take Durst out of the equation for a sec - the band itself was solid. There (was) DJ Lethal (from House of Pain) who had the hip hop background - which Durst has said in interviews he doesn't even listen to 'nu metal' or whatever. You've got a rhythm section that comes from a metal background. Then you (usually) had Wes Borland who was/is really fucking awesome and shares more in common musically with fucking Ween and Zappa than anything the rest of the band would listen to. I'm not going to pretend they're this super deep and amazing band that you guys are missing out on. Either you like them or don't. But I also feel they're often (mostly cuz of Fred) just hated on blindly. (Fred's also hinted in interviews that his stage persona is pretty much satire, but the majority of dudes that are drawn into them are pretty much that stereotype so it goes over their heads). I think they're far weirder and more interesting than they're given credit for. Maybe that's part of what I find so interesting though. They can kind of at this point continue doing whatever they want since virtually nobody is really listening anyway. And I think they're fun to play loud when I just want the aforementioned stupid/fun.

...but yeah, "metal background," I really don't know about that. One of them merely citing Black Sabbath and Megadeth as an influence is not really what I'd really consider a "metal background." The way you put it made me think they'd played in a few metal bands before joining up with Durst.

What I meant was:

Durst/Lethal - thought they were in a rap group.
Bass/Drummer (forget their names) - thought they were in a metal band.
Borland - thought he was in Ween.

It's a weird combo. I like weird combos.
