Yeah their old stuff is vastly superior.

At least the (ex-)members are in other decent bands. I like Primate quite a bit:

URGENT! sort of

New member in serious need of band/album recommendations that sound similar to Katatonia's Brave Murder Day album!

EDIT: I don't suppose anyone can help a guy embed a youtube video here? :)

This video also includes their Sounds of Decay EP. You know, the last good thing they ever released.

Anyway, post help here in this thread. Only you can assist those in need!

That's seriously one of my favorite metal albums of all time. Certainly in my top 5. Not much else sounds like that, and I'm assuming you've already heard October Tide.

Agreed! I actually like it better than their first full length.

Yup. They were good, but not good enough! I want need moar! Browsing various blogs and the Metal Archives hasn't turned up much. I ran into a band called Rapture that was roughly similar. They're first album wasn't too bad, but they don't quite have the grit of Brave Murder Day. They're just a bit too silky smooth.

Yeah Rapture is decent, I forgot all about that band.

But truthfully, not much sounds like Brave Murder Day. It's very rare to see a doom/death record (if it can be labeled as such) have such hypnotic cyclical riffs.

I know the guitarist had a project called Diabolical Masquerade back in the 90s, but I haven't listened to that band in years.

Exactly why I made my epic call to action here. I figured someone has to know of something.

I listened to Diabloical Masquerade and thought they (or he, I guess is more accurate) were boring. I honestly can't even remember why. In fact, listening to songs off his first album right now are boring me and I still can't quite figure out why. Eh. :/ Definitely doesn't have the sound I'm looking for, but I guess you already knew that.
