Stuff like Final Fantasy XV reminds me that I live in a completely different world from the "average gamer" or whatnot. I think it looks atrocious.

I still have high hopes for upcoming spin-offs and whatnot. I just got Explorers, which looks swell.

That series is the best of both worlds IMO in terms of accessibility for beginners and challenge for veterans. They make grinding SUPER easy with auto battle and the option to speed the game up, but if you want to play it like a more traditional JRPG and not use that feature, it's a good challenge. Especially with the difficulty settings that change enemy HP.

Part of me agrees with you. I played the both demos for FF15 and I enjoyed the graphics, game play, sound and so on. But the characters did not resonate with me like other games in the series. It just seemed like a bunch of emo hipsters with magic and swords lol. I hope that the story is good and makes up for the lackluster character designs.

I would kill for a remake of either FF6 or FF9 with the FF15 graphics and a more modern battle system and voice acting. I would buy that in a heart beat. I just hope the FF7 remake is good whenever that will be coming out.

is FFXV really for the "average gamer"? I honestly can't tell who its market is. I'm not trying to be dick-ish in any way. I'm just not really sure who it appeals to. It doesn't look very good to me (so far... I can be, and have been wrong before). And I mean, I'm a guy who enjoyed XIII (and actually thought XIII-2 was great).

I'm far more excited about IX being on PC now than about XV getting released. I'd honestly love another installment that was nice new visuals, but that went in that old school D&D design. But I guess that's why we have the Dragon Age series, and why I'm so drawn to it.

I would say it is, since I think the brand is generally targeted towards the mass market. It's not just their flagship for production values, but also for attempts at evolving game mechanics. Ideally, it represents their best, most current effort, and gets advertised to everyone.

Could be that it's actually a great story and all, just, I haven't seen anything that grabbed my attention. Agni's Philosophy suggests a more interesting story inside four minutes.

Might look into Dragon's Dogma if you haven't. I've heard good things about the expansion content at least.

There's also the remote possibility that they'll be able to use Nexon's Unreal Engine mobile FFXI assets for something that doesn't involve copious microtransactions. Not that the original is bad, but it seems a lot more likely they could port UE4 stuff than PS2-based code.

I haven't, but I have had it on my radar. It definitely *looks* like something I'd enjoy. Actually you just reminded me to add that to my Steam wishlist, so thanks!

I thought Japan would have grown out of the androgynous male protagonist trope by now, but I guess not.

It is not surprising considering some of the other tropes its consumer culture has not yet outgrown...

I thought America would have grown out of the musclebound space marine trope by now, but I guess not.

To be fair, I'm sick of that one too.
