I have spent $300-400 on movies this last month, $100 on replacement cases for all the shitty "Eco" cases, and another $100 on additional shelving.

My collection spans three separate ten foot rows now.

All that and I still have movies on pre-order. My wife just keeps giving the go ahead, I need her to pull my card.

The way digital is taking hold, will there actually be viable collection of 4k video discs taking over Blurays?

For me, I keep older Laser Discs and just buy the newer version on DVD or BluRay when worth for the better video or features. Even though BluRay is the current standard, I at many times still buy DVDs. Every format has video and content not available on other releases. Laser Disc 2001 Space Odyssey Criterion Edition comes to mind.

Funny how every new higher resolution TV from LCD to 4k requires more upscale forcing a repurchase of matched video resolution format players and movies. Hope my HD CRTs outlive me.

Something you can never get thru streaming video
Oh and speaking of exclusives on older formats, my latest out of print DVD purchase that puts the newer BluRay to shame. Bought sealed for $25 shipped. Broke it open, everything inside so crisp. Placed DVD - Book - CD - Film Strip Set in custom sized clear "Comic Book" bag to protect that shiny blue box; the bag method allows easy access.

EDIT
Moved the majority of this Reply into a huge article over to my Laser Disc Guide. A comparison of the different released formats. Hey, Harrison Ford is only on the Laser Disc version of E.T.

Since it's kind of related, can you guys tell me how 4K is going to work with BD's? I guess there's 4K ready BD players coming out now... do they just upscale old releases or what? I'm assuming 4K is going to actually be the future, unlike 3D and all the other gimmicks that have come by. I just hope we don't see the BD format die out for something new already, since it's become a nice standard right now.

It will upscale standard Blurays. I imagine we will still see the standard Blus sticking around for quite some time, just like DVDs. The format is really just a larger capacity Bluray disc if I've read correctly. Different codecs and hardware of course.

Well, forcing is probably a slight exaggeration

I think it's more the reverse. Each new standard for TVs gives video formats room to grow. 4k is probably well thought out, in that respect, as 1080p content can just use pixel-doubling to fill the screen. I don't doubt some will try to do more, but it's not really the same as trying to scale the picture from a VCR or something.
At the same time, I think 4k sets are still catching up to the refresh rates n' stuff that 1080p was hitting.

Far as I know, yeah, 4k Blu is basically the same, just with a higher resolution video file and the additional storage/bandwidth requirements to support it. I imagine it'll wind up being largely like 3D is/was, where you might get the option to buy the deluxe set with the extra disc in there now (the Revenant was released like that, offhand).

I'd still rather have affordable OLED sets or whatnot than 4k, since I think that'd be a better improvement in quality for most.

No doubt. I think the 4k deal is simply a marketing move to keep lcd tech alive. We need something with contrast and color that matches what crt could achieve while maintaining the sharpness and resolution of lcd.

Plasma was great, but the marketing was all wrong. Everyone saw the sets in the store next to a blazing lcd and assumed it had a bad picture. I really wish OLED would be an active competitor with lcd instead of the possible future progression.

It's amazing how many people don't realize that lcd is inferior technology. Unless you purchase the absolute top end set you aren't going to be realizing the kind of contrast ratio (the single most important picture quality element) that you used to get on your bulky CRT.

This is why I moved to mostly watching stuff on a projector. Which is a whole different set of issues.

I've considered this as well. Can you get a projector with great contrast ratio that puts out 1080p for under $1k? If so, I might have to switch.

Though I am looking at one alittle more expensive:

The bulb life on that viewsonic is appealing. At 3.5k I would probably just go OLED though.

I am going to check into the Benq. I'm not sure if I need more lumens or not, my living room isn't exactly blacked out.

If I was going to drop serious change on an HDTV upgrade, it'd be OLED. I've seen top of the line LCDs / plasmas / projectors / OLEDs in person under ideal conditions. For my tastes nothing beats OLED.
