Depends on the culture that surrounds you. I'm at work right now rocking cargo shorts, trainers, and an RCMP t-shirt - but I'm a network admin at a hosting company so that's to be expected. If I wore anything fancier than an untucked button-up or a polo, I'd look out of place. Our sales guys, however, all wear slacks and ties - the one guy I saw over there this morning who was wearing an athletic polo looked really out of place.Luke wrote:Confused; The most successful people wear whatever the fuck they want.
Strength: I look good in a suit. I do.
Weakness: Looks like I'm trying too hard.
Opportunities: I get a ot of compliments on how I dress.
Threats: People automatically think I'm a slimy salesman.

Y'know, "culture of a business" is crap. That's not an insult, but it probably is a blanket statement.
I know this will sound super douche, but I like to set an example. The question to be asked would be "Um... okay, but what example are you setting?".
My answer would be "professional".
The next question would be: "So, um... Hold on... So you think, wearing a suit somehow makes you smart, makes you a professional, or something like that? I'm not following you at all."
I dunno. I'm not a mind reader (but I do own an 8 ball). I just want to be comfy, and with 100% honesty I can say I feel comfy with a double windsor knotted tie, a pressed shirt, polished shoes, and I'm never fully dressed without a smile. That's just who I am, and this isn't a judging thing. Lord knows I have clients who wear Hane's t-shirts with holes in the armpits who provide me with 30k accounts. I give two flies what other people wear, but I prefer to be prepared for a red carpet event at the drop of a hat.

I'm afraid it's really not. I've actually lost my chance at a job because I wore a suit to the interview. Apparently, it's possible to be overdressed for a job interview. Who knew.
I had several other job interviews where headhunters told me not to wear a suit because it'd work against me. I had one guy who told me that one of his clients refuses to even SEE someone who turns up in a suit. You don't just lose the job, you lose the chance to even interview for it.

Very happy day. Seeing you guys giving me a post for my birthday. Awesome day thanks so much.

Happy birthday, dude! I've yet to get one of those threads.mas wrote:Very happy day. Seeing you guys giving me a post for my birthday. Awesome day thanks so much.
Smile: Lionsgate announced that they are going to reboot the original Power Rangers as a movie franchise property. 10 year old me is pretty damn happy.
Frown: Ordered a PSP 3000 and several games. They all arrived way sooner than I expected. The memory card that was shipped separately however...

A) Said they weren't hiring anymore
B) Said they won't be hiring until a later period (like right now they're mostly saying Memorial Day weekend... at the END OF THE MONTH!), which I can understand since while there's plenty of out-of-state tags around, it's still too slow on the island.
C) Gave me an application
Thankfully C)'s the most common answer.
The bad news? Some time ago my mom, my brother and his girlfriend had their phones cut off until they can pay the bill and they naturally used my phone. I kept telling them "don't piss away my minutes" (it's a Tracfone), and what did they do? PISS. AWAY. EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. MINUTE!!! So now it's either put no number on my application and just check in with them in person (what I've been doing) OR just put my number and HOPE that they call after I get minutes on it. But despite the fact that my mom and my brother's girlfriend are both working (both at restaurants, which mostly only gets local patrons on the weekends and the odd out-of-season tourist), we're not getting a lot of money coming in. My brother's been doing work with my dad and I was told he's gonna end up running this ice cream place down the road called Fatty's. But that won't be until the end of the month iirc.
And speaking of the end of the month:
I seriously thought that by now I'd have two jobs and be close to putting money towards moving to New York City. I've already axed the part of my budget allocated for luggage (it was about $100, though realistically by buying it from the thrift store I would have probably only spent $20 at best) and retooled it to where I only need $2,900. That covers three months rent ($2100, or three months' worth of rent, since I'm only looking at what's in the $400-700 range, and that'll get me in a room and have the second month's rent squared away), enough for a Greyhound ticket and to check my luggage ($90, though the ticket itself is as low as $55 if I buy it ahead of time), enough to live off of until I get my first paycheck from my job ($590) and a 30-day unlimited MetroCard ($120, though it's actually slightly less than that, but I just wanted a round figure).
I've still gotta go through my stuff and figure out what I can sell. I still have all those games I mentioned months ago, the ones whose collective value is over $900 but my dumbshit brother thinks I'll only get less than half that. And then there's the fact that I'm considering selling some stuff I hadn't considered selling before (like my Dreamcast, my N64, my model 2 Genesis w/ a model 2 Sega CD, and so on). But that might have been a good money maker down in Florida where I succeeded to get $60 for my like-new copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii, but down here there's fewer people and thus a smaller demand. Seriously, the "Video Games" subsection of the "For Sale" area of Outer Banks Craigslist is pretty much a ghost town save for all the posts from places that don't even count as the Outer Banks. So best case scenario is I can sell 20% of that stuff and get just enough to where the buyer won't bother trying to make a profit on eBay.

Agreed. Fuck socks. I wish I had footpads like a cat so I didn't have to wear shoes either when I go outside.catnip wrote:I basically just rock business casual every day. Somewhat nice shoes, slacks, button-up shirt, no tie. I think it's an easy way to look relatively good compared to t-shirt and jeans, I think. That said, most of the time, as soon as I'm home, clothes are no longer worn. Especially socks. Fuck socks.dsheinem and Luke wrote: Clothes stuff

Yeah, Luke, as you already know, I dont really get your clothing requirements. It seems like you are atleast 5-6 decades out of alignment as far as that goes. Wearing suits to work is one thing, wearing them anytime you leave the house is something I would wager only a very small amount of people do these days. Im not one to say what is comfortable for others, but I hate wearing a suit/tie/coat etc...
It seems most professional settings besides sales and the courtroom have been going more casual focusing on comfort, ease, and performance over presentation.

Sigh... just wondering why you refused? Were you too busy not working or moving to NYC?REPO Man wrote:

Also, most casual clothing, unless you are some wild and crazy guy who dresses to the nines just leaving the house, has multiple pockets. Jeans, cargo shorts, hoodies, etc... why can't you, I dunno, keep your Tracfone in one of these handy enclosures on your person and tell anyone wanting to "borrow" it to kindly piss off?
