I finally got to sit down and play last night until I reached the canyon and was having a tough time. What level would you recommend my characters being to handle the enemies there?

I've just recently made it through there. You can try to power through the first canyon, because you get another party member at the end of it which really helps when dealing with enemies. You also get access to a house that lets you heal any time, which is good for grinding. As far as grinding is concerned, I only went up 1 level in the dungeon after the canyons and got obliterated by the tougher enemies, so you might want to grind 2 or 3 levels for starters (that's my plan anyway).

Yeah this is the best advise.
I recommend grinding right after you fix the mine train and before going into the island shrine at the lake since there are 2 forests to grind with lots of xp. You probably are confused, but when you get to each of those places you will know exactly where I mean. I would grind at least 5 levels at each of those places.
I did tons of grinding so that my characters were all level 33-35 and I had a had a pretty easy (not blowing through the game) beating it.

Here is no sexy CD cover, if you mean a jewel case. It's just inside the cover of the cardboard casing in the original release. The current release has a traditional plastic clamshell case, which is arguably better.

Me, too. I've only played about an hour, just to try it out.

I've mostly been playing Soukyugerentai on the Saturn, with some Cotton Boomerang on the side...

Well if that little disc graphic is worth paying over four times the price online, then by all means go for it. I have the clamshell reprint and the case is far superior.

I have not had the chance to devote as much time to this game as I wanted. I set it down due to work/wedding/life. I just picked it up again to start playing and I am in the Sanctuary. I have the gold key I need for the locked platform but it is still just saying "This switch needs a key!" It is in my inventory...

Is there something I am missing? Is there some other way to activate the switch?
