The hawkmen and griffons and wyverns only get 2 attacks, so they arent near as good late game. But another way it is great, is that you have that freedom to construct the units to your preference.
I agree the end game is wearing a bit thin because the repetition is high. Now each battle is basically hit-alls from the blackrow until everyone is dead, no readjustment of strategies from Strong to Weak or to Leader as one should do in the early (and maybe mid) game.
I'm glad I played Ogre Battle, but I'm too looking forward to the end by now.

The rep system should show a number instead of a bar. It isn't clear and if we didn't have guides it would be tricky to figure out what does and doesn't affect it.

As for flying units being weaker, that almost doesn't matter because you can carry a whole unit of non-fliers with a single "weak" flier and still get the movement bonus. The beast ones tank well enough and even my best frontliners are often dealing piddling damage compared to the hit-all classes in the backrow. That would be the case even if I didn't have Liches (which rarely need their 3rd attack).

I mentioned before, I even like Healers, and I get by perfectly fine in terms of damage output with a flying unit in front and a healer in the back. I can field two muses or a couple of Sorcerers behind. If your fliers are Devils or Seraphims (not sure about the Seraphim as I haven't yet promoted) they can carry my Paladins/Ninja Masters and Muses without losing the movement type, so I have rotated out "weak" Hawkmen types. With Devils at least the flier isn't even that much weaker than non-flying options.

Dragons do seem pretty decent when I face enemy ones.
I still feel that the game would be quite better off with better balancing of the classes, and possibly trimming several classes which seem to be there just for the sake of variety.

For such an old game I think it is quite a good system.
Maybe I'm a bit spoiled coming from Tactics Ogre. Most classes there are unisex, and no strange division between Muse/Enchanter/Mages. There are still a bunch of strange melee classes (the majority of beasts here in Ogre Battle are also there) that you don't really need to bother with but at least they use different skills/weapons and at least appear to be more distinguished from one another other than just having a higher or lower damage output. Flying units (which are also typically weaker there) are strategically interesting in the grid battles rather than just making everyone else fly, and Water units are also actually useful in battles with lots of water.

At least there's a bar. In OB64 there's no indication of what your rep actually is, besides being unable to recruit certain units because your rep is too low. And liberation needs like units, so low ALI for low morale cities, mid ALI for mid morale cities, high ALI for high morale cities. So not only is it easier to screw up (more conditions) but you can't see that you're screwing it up until it's far too late.

Oh my. That sounds immensely frustrating. Is there any cue that you are going up or down at least (like "Yay" or "Boo")?
Are mid aligned units easier to maintain in OB64? Because here at least the extremes are a bit stable.
I guess one could use a unit with half 0 and half 100 ALI to average out on the middle though.

Unless they made several improvements to the overall game system, that sounds like a downgrade if you care about recruiting story chars. and what ending you get.

When you liberate a city in OB64 there's one sound bite for having correctly done it (rep up) and one for doing it wrong (rep down). As for alignments, the alignment of all the soldiers in a unit tend to average out over time (outside of the bumps you get for killing), so that can make it easier to get neutral units. As I recall, though, there are far fewer neutral units in the game, and none of them are stand-out.

Well still going along. I finished Dalmuhd Desert and the Rhyan Sea last night and then picked up all the Zodiac Stones. I also got another Undead Ring, but dont have a staff to go with it to make another Lich yet.

Just a few more maps to go!

Yeah, I should have everything in line for it. Just killed Luvalon and got the Grail. 3 more to go.

So did I! I think I may finish it today.

BTW, I have 5 Liches, one Sorcerer waiting for the 6th ring, and 2 spare Undead Staff :/ It is a massacre, although usually I only field 2 units with a Lich each in any map.

And it is over for me. World Ending, full Rep, 105 days apparently.
The last 2 maps are on the large size and full of enemy units being deployed.

I have units with high luck I guess - got 3 extra Undead Staff, and on the last mission got the third Dream Crown and the 6th (!) Undead ring, making all the Mages I had prepared into Liches (Warren, Saradin and 4 other dudes). That does include stuff obtained by trades (Sentoul Demon for about 3 Staff, Book of the Dead gave me at least 2 Rings etc.)

Really good game with a lot of great stuff in it, but I maintain that the end drags out a bit.

I have 6 liches as well. Picked up a few random rings, finally got a sentoul demon for a staff in the Endora map. I basically disbanded most of my units and created my final 10 of all my best characters and items. Taking down Rashidi today.
