Alright what's your pick for the current round?

I'm going with Seahawks, Patriots, Broncos, Panthers.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I'll be rooting for the Panthers, but I want the 49's to win ;)

It gets back to this "rooting"/"pulling" false dichotomy that you set up. I can certainly root for lots of teams to do well also, but in any given game I either A) don't care who wins and root for a good contest or B) pick a team that I'd prefer to see win.

In the case of A I don't say I am rooting/pulling for either one of the teams, because that implies B. I instead say "I'd be happy if this team wins because I'd collect money but I'd also be happy if this other team wins because I like them, so it is a win-win for me and I don't much care who ultimately wins."

Seahawks, Pats, Chargers, 49ers.

I wouldnt be surprised if the Saints pull off the upset. Denver is the logical choice, but I think San Diego pulls that one off as well but loses to New England.

Well, while Pulling and Rooting both have a synonymous meaning, rooting does have other meanings that he could have meant instead:
Merriam-Webster wrote: Pulling
4

: to feel or express strong sympathy : root <pulling for my team to win>
Merriam-Webster wrote: Rooting
1

: to noisily applaud or encourage a contestant or team : cheer

2

: to wish the success of or lend support to someone or something
So he could be pulling for a team(therefore expressing strong sympathy) while rooting for the other(noisily encouraging the opposition).

So you could tell me that you were "very sad my house was burning down as I know it is a terrible loss" while also standing next to me shouting "Wow, those giant flames are AWESOME! Wooo! Let's see some explosions!"?

That would make you a dick.

Sure, but the difference here is that it's concerning a sports team, not a personal tragedy, so you've offered up a red herring with a specific emotional appeal to your argument instead of actually discussing whether such an alternate definition of the word rooting was used, thereby making you the dick.

Ultimately Luke wants his preferred team to win, but he still wants the other team to have a good game and to play well.

It's this crazy thing called sportsmanship. But remember where Dish lives.
