tomb raider/sherlock holmes are both action/adventure games, what do they share in common?

It's funny ... because ... if you think of a genre that combines puzzle solving and exploration and tasks you with a quest of some kind ... you could almost call it adventuring ... perhaps there's a genre name for that, something like, Adventure. :3

I think the problem with calling too many games "Action-Adventure" is they're mostly just action games with some adventure elements and people not recognizing gameplay being broken up with actual additional elements to the game. If there's no real puzzle solving or exploration (exploration is also a loose term), then I can't really see how they could be Action-Adventure. But again there's feature sets that still sets Zelda apart, for example the dungeon behavior. In most Action-Adventure games enemies are broken into encounters ... Zelda is a little more direct about their separation. Instead of loading to the next area, you just have an overworld linking everything together. Part of the game is figuring out where to go next. Makes you think maybe there should be an Adventure-Action genre, based on prominence of behavior. (why should action have the front seat?)

Which Sherlock Holmes game are you referring to? Most of them are Adventure games of some sort.

There's also a difference between Action-Adventure and Adventure genres.

Yeah, yeah, forgive me an eyeroll  . I was mostly just saying as it applies to me personally (which is besides the point of the more public labels, I know).
Still, exploration has (or at least can have) a different purpose than adventuring, even if adventure is an inevitable side effect. That's why I'll have to mention that part specifically if I think it applies to the subject I'm after.
Still a broad term, I understand. But that's kind of inescapable anyways (and I think intentional).

I think I might be done discussing this though, for now at least. I know my perspective isn't perfect (and I'm not annoyed about it or anything, just done with my input). I do appreciate the feedback everyone gives. It helps me understand a bit better.

Also, I'm not voting again :P . I'll let everyone else make the call.
...just another lost soul...

Forgive me if this has been mentioned, but wouldn't an MMOG based in Hyrule be pretty awesome?

It'd be fairly small to set an MMO in, I would think, and would likely lose most of the flavor of the Zelda games in translating it into one.

Plus, fans would never stop bitching about it being online. Ever. Just ask Square-Enix.
