Well, if you didn't like Demon's Souls, the odds are very low that you'll enjoy Dark Souls. Same thing but more to it pretty much. Plot is in the background and delivered in the same manner as well.

The main improvement to Dark Souls is that armor is actually worth wearing, due to stagger and it actually having enough defense to let you survive a few blows. So you can still go for the super nimble build, but going a full tank actually works now.

Now that this game is a cheap Greatest Hits title I may give it a shot.
I'm hoping they give the story a greater emphasis in Dark Souls 2.

I know this was months ago but whatever.

I would also argue that the overarching mechanics in Dark Souls are actually good, unlike the terrible ones in Demon's Souls. World Tendency and Soul form were horrible, horrible ideas. Nobody wants to constantly get locked out of half their health and always being locked out of numerous features in the levels sucked. Item load also sucked because it made getting new armor impossible (although like Popo said armor was pretty inconsequential in DS). Besides that, enemies in Dark Souls actually get hitstunned. Nearly every single enemy in Demon's Souls had either an invincible animation or just flat out was immune to hitstun (the worst example of this was the giant depraved ones in the swamp). Dark Souls is also much less cheap with its trick deaths, it does a way better job giving you at least subtle hints or chances to evade them. Demon's Souls had a few too many things like enemies around the corner when the passage was so narrow that you couldn't control the camera.

While I'm here, a couple questions:

- Can you sell stuff in Dark Souls? I always thought it was strange that in Demon's Souls you can buy things but never sell anything.

- Are the other weapons worth using? I beat Demon's Souls using almost exclusively a spear/tower shield and bow/arrow. I occasionally used a sword for the few enemies that a slashing weapon worked best for... but eventually I upgraded my spear enough to where it didn't matter that it had a negative damage status against it. Are the other weapon types worth checking out in Dark Souls?

- Can you upgrade the lantern or cast some sort of illumination spell?

Kind of. There is an NPC who will eat your items and give you back souls (or in the case of stones, give you a bunch of smaller ones). But the rate of return is terrible.

I used a giant hammer for most of my Dark Souls playthrough. Spears are still the safest, but there's a lot of good other weapons, including a few that inflict status effects that do a ton of damage.

The Skull Lantern doesn't have any upgrades, but I believe their is an illumination spell.

There is an illumination spell. You get it from Dusk of Oiceiel (spelled wrong.) It does work better then the lantern since it doesn't take away a weapon or shield.

As for weapons pretty much anything is viable now it just depends on you're stats. I was partial to my lightning Claymore for pvp and pretty much the whole game that wasn't ng+.

I platinumed both games, but sadly my data was wiped as my PS3 YLoDed... The games are hard but with trial and error and some help, it's not bad at all.. And both games have major duping problems...

I didn't know about any dupe glitch in Demon's Souls. Dark Souls had its dupe glitch patched out. I'm still mad about it though, it made making pvp builds simple and easy.
