Pretty much.

Just like all hackers hiding behind the homebrew straw-man, Geohot is a huge hypocrite; condemning piracy with his words, facilitating it with his actions.

Oh... I thought it was to run the games off your PCs HDD and FTP them to the PS3 (I thought I saw a PS2 loader that worked that way).

I guess the PS3 right now can only use FAT32 for backups but that might change right? Because all of the PS3's HDDs are larger than 20GB.

No, like Mr.Popo said you could use something like comgenies awesome filemanager to just copy the dev_bdvd directory to your hdd0 and skip the FTP step. You can back games up to a USB disk drive, but there is currently no way of loading them from there, unless they are direct bootable within something like open manager or multiman AND they don't contain files larger than 4GB. You can't use the PKG/XMB boot method for games on USB. It just doesn't work. Possibly something to do with the address for USB is usually dev_usbxxxx so it alters the size of the elf when you replace dev_bdvd (dev_bdvd and dev_hdd0 are the same string length). That could be totally wrong, I'm just guessing.

What I don't understand is at this point, well, what's the point? The code's out there, the damage is done, and they're reverse-engineered security tripe could be installed on every unit across the globe and they wouldn't even know.. Why bother with petty lawsuits - just to make an example?
What more could anybody possibly do from here on out? The system is wide open, and Sony has no way of figuring out what anybody is running on their hdd's.

BAHAHAHA

Check this gem out:
Sony's Motion for TRO wrote:To that end, every file authorized to run on the PS3
System contains an authentic digital signature. Id. at ¶9. SCEA generates each digital
signature using a pair of electronic keys (“Keys”). Id. at ¶10. The PS3 System verifies each
signature using one of those Keys, which is encrypted and embedded in the system. Id. The
other Key is held by SCEA; it is not distributed and cannot be located anywhere in the PS3
System’s code or hardware, or the code of any authorized video game. Id. The PS3 System
will not execute a file unless that file contains an authentic digital signature.
Id.
Unauthorized or unlicensed video game discs (such as those burned from genuine game
discs) do not have an authorized signature code. Id. at ¶11. Accordingly, a normallyfunctioning PS3 System will not run those pirated video games

Are Sony seriously that retarded? Do they not even know how their own system works? What good will falsifying claims get them? Can Sony even get away with that when it can be proven that it's a complete fabrication?

Oh wait, it gets better...

Sony's Motion for TRO wrote:Finally, as a result of their
unauthorized access, Defendants succeeded in discovering – then obtaining – SCEA’s
proprietary information, including SCEA’s Keys that digitally sign code to run on certain
secure levels of the PS3 System

Now they're contradicting themselves. Can the keys be obtained from the system or not? You can't have it both ways Sony. I'd love to see a defence attorney rip this little joke of a TRO to shreds...

You know Sony's reaching when one of their related cases is State of Alaska v. Native Village of Venetie.

Hahaha, they're suing Geohot for extortion too. Because of his cute little retort of 'if you want your next console to be secure, get in touch with me'.

BAHA This is seriously hilarious reading. They go on to mention how the distribution of their keys (which never happened by the defendants, they just provided the equation to work them out) is a circumvention method for piracy. Um... How can Sony's method of prevention simultaneously be it's circumvention method? Derp... There is no circumvention. The security system is still intact. There has been absolutely no break in the security. The hypervisor and all related security systems are functioning 100% when homebrew is running. It's Sony that let the cat out of the bag. They didn't use a proper encryption algorithm.

Sony is going to lose a lot of money. More money than if they'd have just put a proper encryption in there.

I hope they're out of the video gaming market before they can release the PS4. Assholes.

Watch a judge rule in favor of the defense - Sony provided the tools, resource, and instigation to promote piracy from within. Sony should hereby be found guilty of piracy, as it is its machine that allows all other systems to run under its roof.. Soon, Nintendo, Sega, and Atari bang down Sony's door demanding compensation for generations of emulated piracy allowed under its own feeble and lackluster security measures.
After it's all said and done - Sony goes out of business, once the patron saint for David & Goliath-like business practice, a watermark brand for video game hardware and general household name of the 90's and 2000's - only to be jeered out of town and labeled as a headquarters for piracy...

It's really stupid that Sony is being anal about this.. I doubt they win the case either.. And with all that said, I don't think this hurts or helps the console sales of Sony, if anything small 3rd party devs will hurt more than anything.. Hell, the fact that the Xbox could be hacked helped spiked the sales a bit, although I doubt it does that for the PS3..

They're not going to lose money on sales, they're going to lose money on the lawsuits.

They're not that cheap, you know.
