Although I'm wondering if it might make sense to enforce a higher bid increment on this particular item than the $0.50 in the original post, simply because once you're up at this level we could spend all day going back and forth with "Previous bid + 1 dollar".

I see your point, but I can't really add rules mid auction to something as fundamental as bidding.
