I came up with a novel way around this problem in case anybody's interested.

Rather than buy a powerback and solder on a camera battery only to have the same problem I have with the NiMH AA cells, I bought this rechargeable battery pack.

It has an adapter for the PSP which fits nicely into the nomad/genesis, although I believe the PSP has a different input voltage. This battery pack has a nice adjustable voltage though so I can use the PSP end at 9V. I've been running it for several hours now and the battery has barely drained. It has 4 LEDs for power level and it's only down to 3 after probably 3 hours of Sonic 2.

I ended up using velcro to adhere it to the back as if it were a battery pack with a cable hanging off of it. It's kind of tall so I have to rest a couple of my fingers on it when I play but it's not too thick so it's not uncomfortable. The cable's a little awkward so I might decide I like it better sitting next to me anyway. Who knows.

Here's what it looks like.

Yeah, the battery life is fantastic though. It's not too bad attached but I think I prefer storing it attached and playing it with the battery sitting next to me.
