What's awkward and stiff about them? They use practically the same controls as Streets of Rage.

I think Golden Axe is far better. Streets of Rage, while a well made beat-em up, no doubt; is generic. It has generic characters, generic levels, and a generic premise. Golden Axe has the cool fantasy elements, the magic build system, and the beast-riding. All of which sets it apart in sea of clone beat-em ups of the time.

And Comix Zone isn't very good...WHAT?! It's a living, breathing comic book that you get to kick butt in! Complete with panels and everything! It's a very cool game, just freaking harder than it should be.

Both Golden Axe I & II feel stiff and "slow" to me (I'm talking about the Genesis versions). I know it's blasphemous to say this, but I actually like part III the best. Never played it until I got the Sonic collection on 360, it's a great game.

I don't dislike Golden Axe I/II, I just think Streets of Rage I/II are much better (never got into Streets of Rage III - I always found 6-button Genesis games tough to play).

Comix Zone is kinda blah in my opinion. The concept is cool, but I don't think the gameplay holds up. Seems to be one of those games that's hard for all the wrong reasons.

the term "gaymer" enrages me

like it's so incredible that you're gay and like video games that you should tell people

This is literally the first time I have ever heard of this term. It apparently was only used once before on this forum, 4 years ago. I can't imagine it's commonplace enough to actually induce rage?

I remember a few years ago there was a writer on Kotaku that left to start some site that had 'gaymer' in the title or something similar. They used it fairly often in their Kotaku posts before they left. *shrug*

I've heard of "gaygamer," but no "gaymer"

Closest thing I've heard of it used is people on 4chan's /g/ board referring to gaming PCs as "gaymen" PCs. That was thrown around as an insult though and not really something people said about themselves...

Rented a LOT of beat 'em ups as a kid, but was never a big fan.
I think I was the only kid that didn't really enjoy the Ninja Turtles games, and didn't know about the Genesis version until I was in my teens. Grabbed it out of a bargain bin, but still wasn't very impressed.

My tastes have changed a bit over the years, and never giving any of the games a fighting chance (I turned Streets of Rage off almost immediately after starting it), I figured I should revisit a few of them. I considered the TMNT games, but wasn't quite sure if that's where I should start.

Looks like I'll be giving Streets of Rage I & II and shot this weekend.
(Also, I replayed Comix Zone for a while yesterday and I do enjoy it. Might try to beat it some day)

It's actually a crowded market, there are dozens of sites about gaming with the shocking twist of "gayness", whatever that means

This reminds me, according to a friend, when asked about other indie games in an interview the creator of Lesbian Women from Mars (Don't quite recall the name, but it's a Wizard of Wor clone) said that they weren't important because they were made by white heterosexual American males.
