I agree with Luke, that the third act is great, but instead of being a great end to a movie, it's what elevates it from being not a very good movie. The first 2/3rds really drags and I feel like it is all due to the kids and their home situation and the way the eldest kid acts while waiting in line, etc. They should've pulled the kids and everything related to them out. The leads, Pratt and Howard, have a great chemistry I thought and I loved seeing them act off one another and they totally could've had this movie to themselves and been just fine. It made me believe that Pratt taking on Indiana Jones would be a great thing, if done right. But those kids man ... ruin so many moments. There's a specific moment where

So yeah, it's ok. I didn't feel like I wasted my time.

Master with Cracked Fingers, AKA Snake Fist Fighter
Many years ago, around 1971, there was a 17 year old boy who was excellent at kung fu and had a brilliant acting and stunt career ahead of him. His name? Well, we'll just call him Jackie. Now he had appeared in a few films as a child actor already in the 1960s, but in 1971 he had the first chance to be the star and carry the film on his back. This movie became known as Little Tiger of Canton. Unfortunately for poor Jackie, the movie released quietly in 1973 to little fanfare and was largely forgotten for several years...
...until 1978 that is. Because in 1978, Jackie suddenly hit it big with a little film you kung fu fans might have heard of, Drunken Master. Jackie's popularity started to explode at home in Hong Kong and Western audiences began to take notice. To capitalize on this, someone with access to the original Little Tiger of Canton footage decided to remix it a bit with footage taken from Drunken Master. To fill out the new title, Yuen Siu-tien was even hired to again play Jackie's mentor in a Begger So-inspired role, called "The Man Who Isn't There," while a stand in was hired to portray Jackie's character in additional scenes with his face kept intentionally obscured. Dick Randall then got a hold of the reedited project, got people to dub it, and released it in the US under the title Snake Fist Fighter.
Little Tiger of Canton might be a good film. But Master of Cracked Fingers is a ridiculous joke of a movie with new footage shoddily slapped in among old to try and make a quick buck on Jackie Chan's new found fame. To put it lightly, it's bad. And it's almost entirely the new footage's fault. The original film seems pretty interesting, in which Jackie plays a waiter fighting a group of extortionists in his town and ultimately fighting their leader and beating him by repeatedly kicking him in the balls. But this is interposed with random headshots of characters reacting in extreme closeup, new comedy fights that have been slapped on, a tacked-on subplot about a landlord, a new final battle, and even a reference to Popeye the Sailor in the middle of the movie. No attempt was made to color-correct the old footage with the new either, so you'll go from dark shots of the old film to obvious lighter ones of the new footage, with the Drunken Master clips somewhere in the middle. To try and make up for the inclusion of Drunken Master clips, the stand in every now and again throws in a drunken boxing move or two.
Did any of you guys see Game of Death, Golden Harvest's attempt to finish Bruce Lee's final film using stand ins wearing motorcycle helmets? This is the Jackie Chan equivalent, only made worse because of the inclusion of fart jokes, extreme closeups of people shouting like they were part of the movie, and an entirely random flashback at the end of the movie which goes all creepy pedo as The Man Who Isn't There entices a three year old Jackie to meet him at night in the woods, get naked, and climb into his sack.
I liked the stuff from Little Tiger of Canton, but I really don't like Master with Cracked Fingers, even as a fan of both Jackie Chan and Yuen Siu-tien. Yes, even Ol' Dirty can't save this.
That said, there is one saving grace: once weapons end up involved in the final (new) battle, it's actually pretty damn good. The battle between trident and sword is well handled, especially considering the actors are blindfolded at the time. I wish all the new footage could have been that awesome.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Holy shit! I watched @midnight with Chris Hardwick like two nights ago, and they showed the last clip from that trailer. It was just a random clip among other random clips they were showing as part of a game they were playing on the show. Now I know where that clip is from!Ack wrote:Miami Connection is an awesome movie. It was meant to be the taekwondo answer to the 1980s ninja boom. The star, Y.K. Kim, also founded the American TaeKwon-Do Federation and a taekwondo school which became the first Martial Arts World facility.
The plot of Miami Connection focuses on a group of college-aged orphans that Kim has trained in taekwondo who have also formed a synth band named Dragon Sound. One of the guys is dating a girl who happens to be the sister for a local gang leader with connections to the Miami Ninja, a group of ninja that are involved in cocaine smuggling and selling. So Dragon Sound and the Miami Ninja eventually have to have a showdown in which taekwondo defeats the ninja.
Seriously, they even have a song about it in the film:
"Against the Ninja"
The movie is...an experience. In 2013, I gave copies of this movie to both of my brothers for Christmas for a gag.
You should totally watch the trailer:

Oh, and I am looking for a way to watch that movie RIGHT NOW.

Fair assessment. Especially since you agree with me.Stark wrote:Went and saw JURASSIC WORLD. It was okay.

Kidding aside, the movie HAD to have kids for a sub-plot. Like the first film the writers wanted someone everyone could relate to or look up to as a hero. And when you're competing with movies like Age of Ultron, you do need to appeal to everyone (except black people).
Roger Ebert always asked "would I rather have dinner with the cast or see them in a movie?". I always ask "Did I check my watch to see how long I was into the film?". I'd rather see the actors in this film, and I didn't check my watch (although tempted).
Jurassic World is basically a lot of lousy foreplay, for quite sometime, but the climax makes it worth the effort. And since most of us here are guys, we can relate to that.
sexy time
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Jurassic World was pretty solid definitely quite a different vibe from the other movies, but it was great in it's own way. Will agree with Stark though the best characters were Pratt and Howard by a long shot. I also liked Lowery(Jake Johnson) mainly because he was the "nerdy" character with a vintage JP shirt and a desk covered in toy dinosaurs. Everyone else was just kind of meh the kids had a few moments, but the other characters made me role my eyes a few times especially Irrfan Khan and Vincent D'Onofrio(Dino soldiers
). It was a very fun movie and I felt the dinosaurs were very well done with plenty of dino on dino action at the end really glad they gave the T-Rex a chance to redeem himself after getting his ass kicked in 3.
I loved some of the attractions as well like the little kids getting to ride baby triceratops and stuff although a lot of the tourist stuff kind of felt bland I guess the impact of how cool everything was kind of got dwarfed by the fact that I saw it all in trailers a few dozen times over the past few weeks
.
I don't know if I would be to excited for this to get a sequel unless they came up with a really good location but they left plenty of room for one.
The movie did give me a hankering to play Jurassic Park Park Builder for the GBA I either lost or sold it along time ago though.

Professional sports are rigged. Maybe not the NHL or MLB, but that's still debatable. Why bring this up in a thread about movies?
SPACEJAM 2 starring lebron james!
The sequel no one asked for or wants is in the works. I bet we could list at least fifty brands that will be featured in this move and still be short another fifty.
However if that fat dude from Jurassic Park is in it, I'll see it.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I'm assuming Jurassic World is better than 2-3, which would make for an okay movie to me!
Personally I like 2, up until the city bit... ugh.
But yeah, definitely not expecting another JP1. Nothing will ever rival that for me.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I almost feel like Jurassic World should be on a different scale then the JP movies. As a lot of review sites have mentioned it's a lot more of an action adventure movie this time. There aren't really a bunch of tense moments and the few there are are pretty brief. The raptors always got my blood pumping in the previous movies but the hybrid Dino didn't really scare me. I was kind of disappointed by that. Every time the indorex(or whatever they called it) came on screen they always gave you a 10 second heads up where he would slowly lumber into the scene before the action started up.Xeogred wrote:I'm assuming Jurassic World is better than 2-3, which would make for an okay movie to me!

The fact that the only returning character is Dr. Wu kind of disappointed me as well I mean you put Jimmy Fallon in the movie and we couldn't have a 10 second cameo with Malcom or Grant come on

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?

Serpico (1973)
A movie starring Al Pacino playing a police officer who sacrifices everything in his life to expose corruption within the NYPD. This movie was based on real life incidents concerning the actual Frank Serpico. This film was a slow burn, with some pacing issues and a lot of unnecessary fluff in the beginning. That said, once the plot got going in its true direction, the situation for Serpico becomes more and more intense. Pacino's acting is fantastic as usual, and the way the film ends didn't feel overly contrived (likely because it was based on real life). If you enjoy cop dramas and conspiracy thrillers, you'd probably enjoy this. Even if you don't, the cinematography is top notch as many films were in the 70s. Most interesting of all, this film chronicles the state of New York city during its nadir, a grimy crime ridden cesspit that you can just smell oozing out of your screen. Frank Serpico was a fearless amazing man, and Pacino plays him fearlessly in this film.
