Speaking of being a Librarian Ack, what do you think about the, pay discrepancy for library directors based on gender? Someone just posted this on my facebook for some unknown reason and only now knew you were a librarian from this topic so... there is that!

Funny enough, so is Marurun.

I first heard of this phenomenon back in library school while discussing the percentage of male librarians overall. There were a couple of speculative reasons I heard as to why a disproportionate number of men ended up in Director roles and were paid more. The first was that, because men were a minority in the field, they were often paid better so they wouldn't leave for other, more attractive positions. The second was that men favored areas of the library that tend to promote upwards towards a Director position(for instance, men would favor tech services or reference work, which tends to promote high in management versus children's services, which is rarer to see as a Director). I cannot back either claim with statistical evidence, it is just what I was told.

That said, the people who promote or hire library directors are also often university heads or politicians and city managers, which are often men and don't necessarily see these kinds of stats as an issue. I think it's worth considering the breakdown of people who actually do such hiring, because gender bias in hiring and wages might stem from there. It is also worth considering where men are being hired versus women; if male librarians are often hired in major cities but not in small towns, for instance, that might account for some of the difference.

Above all else though, I don't know. Being as I'm not a public or academic librarian, I haven't encountered this.

Anecdotally, every rural librarian I've ever known was female except for two. My mom's on the library board herself, for a rural library. It's seen as an easy, enjoyable job, and the people taking the positions have no ambition to move on to bigger libraries in the cities.

If I had the money and a place that could accommodate it I'd take a decent sized room and build myself a personal library. I'd fill it to the brim with the finest books, movies, records, CDs, and video games. Fine wooden bookshelves, a beautiful rug, the comfiest single person recliner ever devised. Don't forget the mood lighting!

You know you are in rough shape when someone from your 7am Bible study leans over and whispers, "No offense, but you look like shit".

In his defense, I do.

That's actually my next project for the house. I'm going to get some nice wooden bookshelves made for my office as I've overflowed my existing Ikea bookshelves by a good amount and I'd rather get something nice vs. just getting another cheap bookshelf.

Late to the party regarding collecting and organizing conversation but I have close to 1000 with half that as digital or duplicated (for the Xbox 360 I usually get the limited edition at launch then pick up the GOTY edition at a cheap price with DLC later on). I keep track of everything via MS Excel.

I was at Target and noticed all kinds of Star Wars promo signs. As you walk in the front door a full sized Darth Vader stating use the force to open the automatic door. Hey that was neat, did not even have to wave my hand. :D

There is a droid robot display that made R2-D2 burp sounds, okay what happened to R2-D2's legs!!? After I got home my son surprised I did not know about the new Star Wars movie coming out! Okay I need to turn in my Nerd Badge for a renewal refresh. <Jabba Hut Laugh>

Heard it hear first
Wait a minute, Disney owns Star Wars! That Sphero BB-8 robot looks like another Disney robot. Funny that the movie The Black Hole which was inspired by the Star Wars movies now has a spherical robot design incorporated back into the new Star Wars franchise! Come to think of it, the Disney animation Cars have the same eyes.

There is so much Star Wars, I even rescued a Darth Vader and Yoda huge display sign that was going to be thrown away! The plastic back sign is solid with Vader and Yoda crossing Light sabers, so so cool!

Okay is my Nerd card now validated?

The Darth Vader and Yoda sword fight sign kind of like this one with the characters popping out on a separate board for a 3d effect. Twice as large, could take up a whole shelf.
