What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

It sure as hell beats pining away at the house if you don't have someone to go with. I'll give you that. I never really thought to go to the movies on my own, I always just asked someone to come along. Like I said, I'm not opposed to it, it certainly isn't weird.

I also prefer going with friends, but I like to stand around afterward for hours talking about the movie.

These movies would disagree:

Gravity
Dredd 3d
Pina
Guardians of the Galaxy
Metallica Through the Never
The Adventures of Tintin
Doctor Who The Day of the Doctor
Hugo
Life of Pi
Avatar
How to Train Your Dragon
Wreck it Ralph
The Lego Movie
How to Train Your Dragon 2
I'm going to have to disagree with you on all but a couple of those. But then, we disagree also on Mad Max Fury Road. 3D usually taketh away far more than it giveth back.

Gamerforlife wrote:Yeah, that argument doesn't hold much water these days. Guardians of the Galaxy was post conversion and most people agree it had an excellent 3d presentation that they put a lot of effort into. James Gunn made it clear that he wasn't half assing it.

Gravity was made for 3D viewing and is technically a post conversion job as well.
I don't watch a lot of movies in 3D... I need convincing that they're going for something more than a crowd-pleasing gimmick. I like James Gunn as a creator, but Guardians of the Galaxy looked like it was nothing but crowd pleasing gimmick. It certainly wasn't hinging on being seen in 3D to express some kind of autuer's vision.

If the director and cinematographer are originally working to create a 2D image, then I'm satisfied with that 2D image.

ON A KIND OF RELATED NOTE: Has anyone seen Goodbye to Language? It's a 2014 film by Jean-Luc Godard I only recently learned about. It sounds REALLY INTERESTING and I want to see *that* in 3D so much.

Just because a gimmick sells doesn't mean it's permanently here to stay:

As someone who wears glasses, I loathe 3D films. The last one I saw gave me a headache that lasted three days.

Also, Avatar sucked. You never go against the species.

Everyone I talked to that just loved it said they loved it because it looked amazing in 3D. The story was incidental. I don't regret not seeing it in 3D, I only regret seeing it at all.

I don't get how anybody does go to the movies alone. It is weird. I've never gone to a movie where I saw someone there alone without somebody, either with me or with others, pointing out how weird it is. If it wasn't weird, people wouldn't say such things, and there wouldn't be the general idea that it isn't something you do alone.

I don't know. It seems fine to me, why should someone miss out on the experience just because they don't have someone to take along. Not everyone is a social butterfly. I don't think sitting around and missing out on life would be a better choice. It isn't my preference, but I have never thought "Look at that guy who came alone, he is weird."

For me...

1) Sometimes I have to go to movies by myself. I'm obligated to see some movies and I'd rather not be interrupted.

2) I once lived a hop, skip, and a jump away from a theater. I never hopped nor skipped, but I did have to jump a creek, and I was there. It was like my own bridge to Terabithia. Most nights I would be the only person in the theater, especially at 11pm screenings.

It's not weird at all. Do you think the check out girl at McDonald's is thinking "Oh my God, I can't believe he's eating alone. What a weird-o."? Do you think girls who don't have a friend to go to the bathroom with come off as weird? I don't think the people at the library are weird for reading alone.

Going to a movie by yourself is pretty awesome. If someone thinks you're weird for seeing a movie alone, they are right. That's because everyone is weird. But I can attest to the fact that seeing a movie by yourself is pretty great.
