I just ordered a model 2 Saturn with an action reply 4 in 1 and a copy of xmen vs streetfighter. Its my first time owning the console since 2007, when I sold it to fund a PS1. Its just nuts to see what some of the games are selling for nowadays. Anyways I'm looking to build a small quality collection of japanese import 2d fighters, a few Sega titles, and the odd platformer. Right now my sights are on:

Xmen COTA( getting the import for the killer cover art)
Vampire Hunter( same as above)
Samurai Spirits III/IV
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Virtual Fighter 2
NIGHTS( need to buy 3D controller for that)
Earthworm Jim 2 ( big fan of this series)

I may pick up a few reasonably priced shmups too, and I'd love to pick up the notable RPGs but the prices for those are beyond what I'm willing to pay.

I think that is a good approach. You will get a lot more gaming out of the Japanese scene than the US market. Unfortunately, some of the prices are beyond ridiculous especially compared to the JPN prices. The best part is that most of the games/genres you want are very import friendly.

If you want an odd platformer, get Astal. It has beautiful 2D art and shows off the Saturn's 2D muscle really well.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out. I'm pretty much getting back into 2d gaming, and I've always loved 2d fighters, so my saturn will be sitting beside my dreamcast for some sweet ole school 2d fighting action. Out of interest, how does NIGHTS hold up? Believe it or not I've never played it. I plan on hooking the system up to a 26" Bravia using s-video, so I'm hoping I get a decent image out of that combo. I have a 26" Trinitron that would be my preferred display, unfortunately the wifey is encouraging me to get rid of it due to space issues,

Also, meant to say first time owning since *1997* above. I bought a Saturn at launch, but I don't recall owning many games for it so its going to be cool discovering its library( what I can afford anyway lol). This will be my first time playing xmen vs streetfighter for instance, really looking forward to it.

I think NiGHTS is still quite the charming game. It's aged graphically but I think the image will be just fine on the CRT.

For an expensive way to dump your CRT, you could look into the XRGB-mini. It is definitely costly but it is an incredible way to play the older consoles on a modern TV.

Like ferretgamer said, Other than some 18 year old 3d graphics I believe that it is still very playable and fantastic experience. Great idea waiting on the 3D controller by the way. It makes a world of difference when playing NiGHTS. Its one of my all time favorite games so when you do eventually sit down to play let us/me know what you think!

Agreed. I played through it a few years ago and loved it. The gameplay, the music, and - to a cerain extent -the graphics, have held up wonderfully.

Question for others, is it on any demo discs to try?

Nights is a weird game. I don't think there is any middle ground of opinion on it. Most people seem to think it is amazing. I think it is a boring and pointless game about flying around in circles where you can only see 5 feet in front of your character. Though for reference I'm generally not a platformer fan either and I think it sort of plays like a flying platformer as far as the actions go. That's why I think the limited visibility is a problem. I know I'm in a minority among retro game fans though, thus the suggestion to try it on a demo disc if there is one and you can find or try elsewhere first.
