Why is it I remember them playing NHL 94 on a Saturn?

The Launch Promo video was Horrible when they had a bunch of kids go to Nintendo HQ Bond Style.

HORRIBLE

While it's not on You Tube anymore I did an episode of my old Show Retrocade where I Lampooned this (and other things) it can only be seen on Archive.org now

It's basically me MST3King Promo videos for an hour or so.

You are probably right that it was first a Genesis then they swapped it to a Saturn game in Post. Thats a nice bit of trivia right there.

Yeah I really remember seeing them playing NHL 94 quite specifically. I need to recheck my DVD

Edit: went back and checked and it is indeed NOT NHL '94. Maybe there was some other movie (Kevin Smith or otherwise) where NHL '94 was played?

I swear that there was a hockey game in Chasing Amy, but c'mon... that MUST have been a Saturn game by then.

Another thought, there are a couple different television cuts of Mallrats. Maybe for some odd reason '94 was in one of the TV cuts?

I'm sure it has been mentioned in the 19 pages here, but the big thing to me is arcade conversions - specifically Midway. NFL Blitz, San Francisco Rush... - when these games had a PSX version also, the N64 was better.
