Well, there's always Wild West C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa, an older show that you just reminded me of.

The series also had an arcade game from Konami, while we're at it. It was pretty much Sunset Riders with cows (bulls. whatever.).

And even older: Braaaave-staaaar (very nice), the Galaxy Rangers (sadly it lasted about as long as Starcom), and the strangely overlooked Legend of Calamity Jane (kinda looks like the old 50's move).

Wow. All this western talk has given me a hankering to watch the Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

And Mighty Max.

My girlfriend and I just got done watching all seven seasons of the 2003 era Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Highly recommended. Even the low points of the series beat the pants off of the old cartoon, especially if you liked the Mirage comics.

I remember being pretty impressed with the first season of the '03 cartoon when it first aired.

As for how it compares to the old show... it was a different time and the show had a different goal in mind. It's silly and fun. I wouldn't say it 'beats the pants off of the old show', you're warring with nostalgia there.

Oh, man, I had totally forgotten about that show. I don't think I watched too much of it, but I definitely remember the intro.

I loved the old show (still do, in my own way), and it still has some moments that stand up well. The entire pilot mini-season is pretty solid, actually, and the final seasons were severely underrated. I know better than to judge it by the standards of modern adventure cartoons, or even 1980s anime, but even as an eight year old I could occasionally see where it got thin. As an adult, it's pretty much a giant vacancy between seasons 2 and 8.

I know I'm in the minority though. Being an '80s nostalgia fan without letting it obliterate one's critical faculties is an extremely rare gift--or curse, if one takes it to forums laden with nostalgic fans. My childhood memories of the show are also probably affected by having been exposed to the original Mirage stories by the time I was 9 or 10, and immediately finding them superior to the cartoon I already loved.

I'll put it in these terms: the vast change in times and standards didn't keep Justice League Unlimited from being better than Super Friends. Surely nothing about the Turtles makes them any more immune to improvement.

I agree with your point but...Really, Super Friends? That's the best comparison you have to work with? Super Friends was awful even back then. Very poor animation. And just pure cheese dialog.
