It's been quite a while since I've updated. Getting the hang of fitting in gaming time around my new job schedule took a while, but hopefully I should pick up the pace a little again. I'm quite a way behind my usual average of 70 games beaten a year this year.

Both new entries this time are fantastic games, and in my opinions must haves for 3DS, but also pretty much more of the same. Do you like Pokémon games? You'll love Pokémon X & Y then, because they're polished, well paced and fun entries in the series, with enough new stuff to keep it interesting. The 3D models look great, the music is pretty good, although not as catchy as some in previous games and the new pokémon are pretty cool. There's lots of old pokemon here too, with 450 total to choose from for your team, offering tons of variety. I'm not too keen on the whole mega evolution thing, and the game is already way too easy as is, but overall its pretty great.

Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is absolutely more of the same as the previous entries, but I have zero issue with that. Again, the series has transitioned to 3D graphics in a way that looks fantastic, without losing any of the character of the 2D games sprites. In fact, the effect is so well done its easy to forget you're looking at 3D models sometimes. I thought the cases seemed a tad easier than usual - but in a good way. It still involved a lot of thought, but there were far fewer moments where you resort to blindly guessing because you don't know what the game is getting at (and in those situations, you normally had some idea how it all worked, you just dont know the specific answer the game wants right then). Sometimes it can feel a little hand-holdy, and some people may be put off, but its not blatant about it. The story is as compelling as ever, and the dialogue is still often hilarious. The cases offered some twists which caught me out on occasion - several times it led me towards one conclusion then successfully upended it and forced me to rethink - much better than some other cases in the series where you know whats going on long before the in game characters work it out (although that does still happen sometimes). Overall it's absolutely fantastic, I can't wait for the DLC case to be released and I really hope it sells enough for Capcom to keep them coming to the west. I just wish I could've owned it on physical media instead of a download.

Deathsmiles isn't new, but I just realised I didn't add it to the list before now. I think it's because it was on 360, a system I don't own, but I noticed I listed DoDonPachi Resurrection so I might aswell be consistent about it.

*New - Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate - Vita*

The game has a few things going for it. It does the Metroid formula well. When you acquire new abilities, it's fun to revisit previous areas and uncover new secrets. For some odd reason, a few reviewers and podcasters have said that the game has a horrible map system. I can only assume that these people have never played a Metroid game in their life because I found the map easy to use and can't imagine how the designers could have improved upon it. I never got confused about where to go next and had little difficulty using the map to help me locate many of the game's secrets.

The game's dialog and voice acting are also good. And the graphics do a very good job of mirroring its console counterpart. The music is decent, though there's very little of it

Everything else about the game sucks though. The combat system is a sloppy mess and you can't even do half of the stuff that Batman can do in the console games. The stealth sections are a complete and utter joke. They're so simplistic they remind me of those old Tiger electronic games from the 80s. To see what a game like Mark of the Ninja did with 2d stealth last year, the stealth sections in Blackgate are utterly embarrassing by comparison.

The only other good thing I can say about the game is that it has some interesting boss fights. Unfortunately, they all revolve around trial and error rather than skill, which actually makes them a bit frustrating. Overall, I'd rate this game a 6 out of 10. It manages to be a decent Metroid game, but a horrible Batman game by the standards set forth by Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the Super Nintendo is still the best 2d Batman game ever made.

I also got the Platinum for Puppeteer. It was a bit frustrating to discover that a handful of the game's secrets are things you wouldn't discover without a faq or guide of some sort, but overall I stilll love this game and it's probably my favorite game of 2013

Games Beaten: 2012 2011 2010

Played these two between Saturday and this morning. Went into both expecting mediocrity and, in both cases, got something a little bit better than that. Neither is a groundbreaking game or a "must play" for either system, but both do enough to scratch appropriate itches and are fairly fun to move through. They offered an interesting contrast to the previous two games I beat, at the least.

Katamari without Takahashi just really isn't the same. I've played a few of the later games and all of them just had something "off" about them.

Better off just sticking to the two Ps2 games.

I dunno, this one seems pretty similar to the first PS2 game from the time I remember spending with it. It felt like a portable version of that game, which is good enough for me. The strange humor and scalable difficulty are both there, and the dual anaolg makes it feel natural. Not sure what you think is "off"...

Intangible "something."

I'm sure a more in-depth analysis or something could reveal exactly what the problems are, but I suspect it's a lot of minor things that just add up. I'm mainly just going with my gut here, but I simply have found the post-Ps2 games overall less enjoyable, and the fact that Takahashi stopped being involved with the series after those first two I think is a big part of why that might be.

Haven't had access to a Vita yet so no. Can't say that game was on my radar either (for the reasons I mentioned), but if you think it's worth picking up on the cheap I'll keep my eyes open if/when I get a Vita.

Yeah, @$40 it is a hard sale. It was recently $3.75 on PSN+, and well worth that price!

78. Super Scope 6 (SNES)(Light Gun)
79. Yoshi's Safari (SNES)(Light Gun)
80. The Adventures of Batman & Robin (SNES)(Action)

Yeah, I decided after Super Scope 6 to run through the other Super Scope game I own. Yoshi's Safari is bright, colorful, but more than a little repetitive across its 12 stages, as you'll likely have seen every normal enemy and mini-boss design by the time you're halfway through. It struggles to keep gameplay fresh, but it's not a long game, so I suppose it's forgivable. And the boss designs are entertaining. Most require you figure out exactly where your target is and unload on it under special circumstances, though there are a couple of bosses that are genuinely surprising, such as having to drop a flying anvil on Wendy Koopa's head. I do love that I can shoot Yoshi in the back of the head occasionally, and there's a co-op element where the second player can maneuver Yoshi to dodge oncoming enemies and projectiles.

And then there is the SNES version of The Adventures of Batman & Robin. This game is great! It's not perfect, but it has gorgeous animation, wonderful sound, and a great variety of level and boss designs to keep things interesting. My personal favorite level has to be The Penguin's, where Batman and Robin move through a museum, rescuing hostages and avoiding hidden explosives. But each level offers something unique, ranging from a bizarre labyrinth and obstacle course for the Riddler to a car chase sequence for Two-Face, to a wonderful 2D platformer as Batman chases Catwoman across skyscrapers lit by searchlights.

I do have a few gripes with Batman & Robin, the first of which is that the grappling hook never felt comfortable. There were quite a few times where the grappling hook would suddenly detach if I swung the wrong way, or wouldn't fire if I was apparently too close to a surface, or would somehow manage to slingshot me directly into a pit that I was trying to avoid. Of all of Batman's equipment, this was the only one that really frustrated me. Everything else worked wonderfully: batarangs, explosives, knock out spray, the flashlight, everything was splendid. Just not the grappling hook. My next complaint is that while boss fights were generally impressive, there were a couple that were frustrating(Clayface comes to mind), there were a couple that were nearly identical, and the Man-Bat fight was just too ambitious by attempting to create a 3D fight in 2D. The end result made for a difficult mess because I couldn't tell when I was about to be hit or when I could hit back. The perspective needed to make it successful just wasn't there. Thankfully it was a short fight, and once I tagged him I could usually add in a couple more quick hits to speed things up.

Also, the game is The Adventures of Batman & Robin, but Robin only shows up in one level.

Anyway, gripes aside, the game is a splendid treat which shows off what the SNES was capable of but also takes me back to the days of watching animated Batman. I actually remember the episodes this game's material was pulled from. And I love the Bruce Timm artwork. Good times.
