Nerds already hating on the new Bat-voice, but he only has one line so time will tell if we got ourselves another dumb voice or not.

Lst night, my wife and I watched:

The Babadook (2014). It is a perfect horror film, and I consider it one of the best I have ever seen. It is beautifully shot; it is perfectly paced; it wonderfully directed; it is thought-provoking; Essie Davis gives a fantastic performance in the lead role; and, most importantly, it is absolutely terrifying. The titular monster, Mister Babadook, is a cross between a silent-film-era horror, a Max Fleischer cartoon, and pure darkness, and he ranks among the very best horror movie creations. Like The Shining, the film steadily builds to crescendo of terror, and it employs some of the best techniques of other horror films without aping any of them. ("You can't get rid of the Babadook...") It even has a happy(?) but nonetheless extremely creepy ending that wraps the film up perfectly.
I must also add that, as a parent to young children, I found the film particularly affecting. The main character is a working widow whose son has serious behavorial problems. Her identity and her life consists entirely of working at a dead end job, caring for her son, maintaining her home, and addressing her son's behavior. She lives in a state of perpetual exhaustion, and she is completely alienated from her friends, her family, her interests, and society at large. I have two very good children and a wonderful partner helping me raise them, but even the best children can be extremely trying. Watching the film, I understod the reasons for her break-down completely and intimately, and I am not certain I would fare any better than the main character if I were placed in her situation. Some critics have written that the film addresses the subject of grief - and it certainly does to a certain extent - but to my wife and I, at least, the film is much more about losing control over the exhaustion, frustration, and stress associated with parenting. (Moreover, when the film deftly switches to the child's point of view, you realize just how terrifying you appear to your children when you are frustrated with them.)
I now consider The Babadook one of the very best horror films, and I cannot recommend it highly enough to fans of the genre. Moreover, it is currently streaming on Netflix; so, those of you with the service can watch it instantly.

Nail on the head. I adore this movie. This and "It Follows", which I just watched last night, are easily two of my favorite horror flicks I've ever seen, albeit for different reasons.

People are killin' it with the practical effects and psychological horrors lately.
Final Fantasy IX is the best one

Babadook was excellent. Though I think you guys hold it higher than I do. But it was really great.

I really want to see It Follows. That looks awesome.

That is probably true. I am holding it really, really high right now...like "top ten horror films of all time" high... I will have to see if my reaction to it has dulled in a few months (but I kind of doubt it).

Admittedly you also have kids, so the impact is a bit different. Still, I thought it was quite good, and I loved the changing protagonist/antagonist dynamic that evolves through the film.

Is it me, or is the new Poltergeist too silly because it has a cursed flatscreen TV? Speaking of curses, I hope none of the crew is going to experience unfortunate events like the original's.
