Im going to guess it is an android tablet - it is just a weird bug that we cant seem to squash.KalessinDB wrote:Picked up a tablet because work has turned up the internet monitoring, and I still have unlimited data on my Verizon phone so why not?
This should explain my absence, though I doubt many noticed
Sadly, it defaults to mobile view for here and I haven't found the setting on the boards to disable that yet. I can tick my browser's Request Desktop Site box, but that doesn't seem to stay between sessions... Oh well, I'll survive

Yeah, Samsung Galaxy Tab 4... it's no big deal, I'll either get used to the mobile interface or just get used to ticking my Request Desktop Site box.fastbilly1 wrote:Im going to guess it is an android tablet - it is just a weird bug that we cant seem to squash.KalessinDB wrote:Picked up a tablet because work has turned up the internet monitoring, and I still have unlimited data on my Verizon phone so why not?

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

I'm fighting board members. Not physically, but I'm in a pickle of a situation.
My issue is that I know people are doing everything wrong, but I can't say what is right without a solution. I have two weeks to wrap my hear around this, but as always feel free to chime in.
ECU is home of the Pirates, who say "Argh!" and my museum is hosting an "Arghtini" in mid-July. I don't like it. Think it is a really, really bad idea.
There are some good things, and I say that because the goods things are my ideas
. A steel drum band playing when you walk in. Caribbean food (or what American's think is Caribbean food).
Bad stuff: Calling it "Arghhhtini". Having a pirate themed party in July, in eastern NC. Having alcohol and a limbo contest. Having a limbo contest, period. Asking an audience full of Grandparents to dress like pirates.
Now if it was basketball or football season I would suggest a "Purple and Gold Party". That could work. But a "dress up like a pirate" party? That's dumb.
Not sure what to suggest, but I'll be thinking about ways to tie in July with fundraising.
It drives me crazy that we feel like we "need" to have a fundraiser...when it's not a fundraiser if you don't raise funds.
I can already see the "no line" for people who don't want to limbo.

If the women involved want to be objectified by their own will, isn't this democracy and freedom of choice?

Yes. They are free to do it, and we are free to criticize it.RCBH928 wrote:If the women involved want to be objectified by their own will, isn't this democracy and freedom of choice?

The amusing thing about women flaunting sexuality is that they themselves are split down the middle as to whether it's empowering, or objectification. Just depends who you talk to.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Yes. Well, the classic feminist position is that a woman should be able to be sexual (or not sexual, her choice) without being sexualized (or objectified), and without other women being sexualized (or objectified) against their will by society as a whole.BoringSupreez wrote:The amusing thing about women flaunting sexuality is that they themselves are split down the middle as to whether it's empowering, or objectification. The more modern feminist position seems to see all sexualization in the same light. A woman who wants to be sexualized and makes that choice effectively harms the cause by encouraging the sexualization of all women by playing along.
Keep in mind that when feminism first arose, women were not allowed to be sexual beings. They were externally objectified, but were not allowed to have any control or expression of their own, sexual or otherwise. Thus the desire to control one's own sexuality went hand in hand with being able to vote and own property and not "belong" to a man. In the modern context, not only do we objectify women as a culture, we also rampantly over-sexualize women. This has resulted in a kind of feminist blow-back. There are now some feminists who think any kind of sexualization, even by choice, is bad because it encourages sexualization of all women, with or without their consent. This does often result in so-called feminists shaming other so-called feminists for expressing their sexuality in ways more classic feminists might have found, at the time, empowering.
Fortunately, the old-school and new-school feminists share a goal of not being unwillingly sexualized and objectified by society by default. Unfortunately, the old-school and new-school feminists don't necessarily agree on issues concerning acceptable self-expression. But thankfully, they don't argue too much about it and manage to stay focused on the imposition of objectification by others (usually men in media, including TV, movies, and games or politics).
Note that these are generalizations and not meant to represent or define any given individual's views.

As someone with friends in the burlesque community, I've seen a lot of arguing over this issue, and there is a lot of confusion in women who are entertaining the idea of openly expressing their sexuality as a result. If anything, the argument is hurting feminism, both in how it is perceived by young women and in how it is perceived by men.marurun wrote: Fortunately, the old-school and new-school feminists share a goal of not being unwillingly sexualized and objectified by society by default. Agreed. I am much more in agreement with the old-school types. I do see the new-school feminists as ultimately serving puritanical interest.Ack wrote:As someone with friends in the burlesque community, I've seen a lot of arguing over this issue, and there is a lot of confusion in women who are entertaining the idea of openly expressing their sexuality as a result.
