All the big chains are dead or dying, but there are family-owned businesses still open. My local place, video mart, has been owned by the same family for twenty years now. They're not going to quit just because business has gotten tough.RCBH928 wrote:I thought those stores were dead in the USAAck wrote:Oh shit, my local video rental place just got in a copy of Dead Heat. The Day After(1983)

Picked this up a while ago and just got around to watching it. Pretty dark anti-war movie in which basically the shit hit's the fan and the U.S and U.S.S.R. unleash their nuclear arsenals on each other. Acting is pretty horrible, but the effects are decent for the time. Also the make up for the radiation poising and etc. is pretty disturbing and they really went all out with the extras there are scenes with 300-400+ people and it really gives you the feeling of how chaotic things would be if a situation were to ever occur. Ending is very open, but the film serves it's purpose.

Stand Up Guys
This was recently added to Amazon, and the quotes in the graphic here nail it really well. Partners in crime reunite to spend one last night together, except one of them has a mission of his very own. It's just as you'd expect when you seen Pacino and Walken together. Lots of great moments and it's just really fun, highly recommended.

The Guy With The Secret Kung Fu
If you want barrel-scraping chop socky, look no further than Amazon. Here we find 2 brothers, known for being "revolutionaries", sent to take down the Dragon Gang. Good fighting sequences, but terrible editing with lots of bad cuts and freeze frames for no apparent reason, inappropriate use of sci-fi movie music every 5-10 minutes, lots of badly dubbed laughing, and the use of a floating coffin to take out the otherwise invulnerable leader. That's it.

Caught a matinee this morning and really enjoyed the movie. Story is good it's got a good sense of humor and a nice balance to where it's not to serious or to goofy. The action is also very well done and there is a lot of it. They did a great job of framing the main actors during shootouts and fights as well which seems to be an issue with a lot of movies. The majority of the fight scenes are also really hectic with anywhere from 5-30+ people being involved in a single action sequence really there are only 1-2 one on one fights in the whole movie yet I never lost track of what was going on. The cast was also great especially Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Michael Caine, and the lead Taron Egerton who all did a really solid job with their roles.
On the other hand there were a few things I didn't like.
1.It was definitely a lot more violent/mature then I was expecting kind of was under the impression that this was going to be like PG-13 level from the tv spots, but it definitely earned an R
2. They gave Samuel L. Jackson's character a heavy lisps which was just kind of weird/unnecessary
Nothing really major though just definitely not a movie for young kids. I would describe it as kind of like a modern version of Sean Connery's Bond film just with a lot more foul language tossed in and a lot more action. Well worth watching I highly recommend it for fans of action/spy movies.

I watched the HBO Scientology documentary tonight, but really didn't learn a whole lot that I didn't already know. Still, it is a good primer. Shit's fucked up.

Did they still include the disclaimer "This is what Scientologists actually believe"?dsheinem wrote:No they had their own version of the Xenu story but with more CGI.MrPopo wrote:Did they play the clip from South Park?dsheinem wrote:I watched the HBO Scientology documentary tonight, but really didn't learn a whole lot that I didn't already know.
