Sonic 3
I hadn't played through this one in a few years and had forgotten how damn irritating it is. Don't get me wrong - the control is great and there are some fun platforming sections. But then there's tons of annoying shit. Most levels are haphazardly slapped together and seem to have a surplus of these damn pulleys / levers / traps / obstacles that do nothing but turn the game into a slog. This is Sonic, I wanna go fast not stop every 10 seconds to collect my rings because some dumb ass hidden spikes appeared out of nowhere. I even ran out of time in one stage because I wasted so much time getting bounced up, down, and all around by springs.

It seems as if most other people enjoy this game. I suspect that many Sonic 3 fans have played the game often enough to have it memorized and down pat. I honestly don't find it compelling enough for another playthrough.

I liked Sonic 1 & 2 quite a bit, but this one comes up short. I think I recall enjoying Sonic & Knuckles as well, I'll have to play that one again soon.
Contra
There's been numerous sequels and other games of the same genre, but I don't think there's even been another run 'n' gun as good as NES Contra.

This game is essentially flawless. It controls beautifully, the music is insanely good, the levels are diverse and well-constructed, and the homage to 80s action/sci-fi always brings a smile to my face.

On a side note, I do think the difficulty is a bit overstated. It seems as if I see Contra on every "hardest games ever" list, but in reality it's quite manageable. Yeah, the one-hit deaths can be a pain in the assicle, but the game is generous with continues (3) and you're guaranteed at least one 1-up per level via points accumulated. Plus, Contra is short and linear enough to easily memorize enemy placement. It's a complete breeze compared to other NES classic like Mega Man, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, and Ninja Gaiden (three games I have never come close to beating).

As much as I love Contra, I have still never completed its sequel - Super C. It's on my Summer Gaming list so I'll attempt that next.

Nah I'm with you Bone. Sonic 3 is my least favorite by quite a bit. The only zones I really like in that one are Hydrocity, IceCap, and Launch Base. Angel Island feels really generic, Marble Garden is an absolute mess to navigate, and Carnival Night just farts out sounds and destroys your ears.

Definitely hit up S&K next. It's all too apparent especially when you play it locked in with Sonic 3... just how much better it is. I'm not big on Sandopolis, but I'd easily take that over half of Sonic 3's zones.

As I said earlier, the Sonic games tend to get all jumbled in my head. But I'm making the point to play the "classic" ones all during this year so hopefully I can get better at distinguishing them. Plus, they're mostly fun.

I've done 1, 2, 3, and CD. S&K is next followed by (oh boy) Sonic 3D Blast. Maybe Spinball as well.

I don't own Knuckles' Chaotix, unfortunately. I should probably just buy it, my 32X has been collesting dust for years.

I love 1, 2 and CD. I don't care for 3 or Knuckles for the reasons Bone stated.

Play the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast with the 3D control pad and forget that it's a Sonic game.

It's not so bad that way and the music is incredible.

I think the Genesis music is incredible too.

I've personally always been a fan of 3D Blast. Arguably the best 3D Sonic game in my book... lol.

I've always hated Spinball. Music was always headache inducing to me too.

If Generations didn't exist I'd be in agreement. I can't stand how the Genesis version controls though.

And both versions are at the very top of great Sonic soundtracks for sure.

I liked the Sat version.... but no saving if I recall?

Generations is incredible.

This thread has me playing All-Stars racing tonight though.
